Umm, she is (will be) the new companion, as of episode 6 this season.  It's unclear if the character is Oswin or not.

^^ There is lots of fan speculation floating around surrounding the Oswin character(s). Some think Jenny (the Doctor's daughter, series 4) is going to be involved, much of that theory based on the chair in these two photos:
Personally, I'm just going to wait and see.

I thought the actress who played Oswin would have made a wonderful "companion".  And it turns out, that's exactly who she'll be.  A different character than in this episode, though.  Rather odd!

Seeing as this thread has sort of restarted. Opinions of episode 1 of series 7?

I liked it, but only a bit. Episodes have been getting a bit weak the last couple of years. And this episode is obviously just setting up next years big return for the 50th anniversary.

I've finally gotten into the show, about a month ago.  Starting off with the recent seasons (since I want to watch the new one before TOO long) and I have to say...I'm a relative addict right now.  Finished season 2 (of the new ones) a few days ago, such a sad last episode.  I confess a love interest in Rose. Embarrassed

My god, I can't believe I missed this thread.  Let's see, read something about top five companions, so here goes.

Sarah Jane Smith (Lis Sladen)
Dorothy "Ace" McShane (Sophie Aldred)
Rose Tyler (Billie Piper)
Romana Mk. 2 (Lala Ward)
Amy Pond (Karen Gillan)

Runners-up, Romana Mk. 1 (Mary Tamm) and Ian Chesterton (William Russell).
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Halfway through the second season. First conclusion: the Doctor is the worst grandfather EVER.

Most recent Christmas special was bland. "A Christmas Carol" was brilliant, though. Gotta love flying sharks.

Yeah the ending was…  weird. I just love how it's acted out. And Peter Kay was awesome. And the ELO references. I loved it.

RTD's writing varied wildly, IMO. One episode would be brilliant and the next would be complete schlock. IMO, he actually improved in both quality and consistency in Series 4, which is my favourite of the new/revived series.

The main thing I don't like about Love & Monsters is the ending. It was pretty ridiculous and horrifying if you think about it.

Shada, Douglas Adams' episode that never got completed, has been finally turned into book form. I never actually heard the audio version of it so this should be good.

Last series was…. average. Moffat is one of the best writers to write for DW, but he just hasn't had any really fantastic stories since he took over. Unlike the 4 fantastic ones he wrote for the Eccelston/Tennant era.

I tend to agree with you. My only guess would be that the role as show runner likely takes up a lot of his time and concentration (I often felt the same way about RTD-written episodes).
