BLACK PEARL      The mother of all Funk Rock bands from San Francisco with a "sex machine" singer who modelled himself on James Brown. Black Pearl were once described as a band who "crank out some hard rockin' psych-rock music with the most ferocious drumbeats you've heard in a while", and having just listened to their two albums of pounding, pulsating rhythms, who am I to disagree!? Smile

BIG BROTHER & THE HOLDING COMPANY      One of the Big Four psychedelic bands from San Francisco, alongside the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service and Jefferson Airplane. The unforgettable earthy blues singer Janis Joplin led Big Brother & the Holding Company on their first two albums before leaving the band in 1968 to pursue a solo career, just two years before her untimely death in October 1970 at the age of 27, and following just one month after the tragic loss of Jimi Hendrix at the same age - making them two early members of the so-called "27 Club". Big Brother & the Holding Company went on to record four more albums without Janis, but it's always their first two albums with Janis that they'll be forever remembered.  Broken Heart

Canned Heat are coming up later, and regarding Jefferson Airplane, they were the only band to play all three of the major music festivals at Monterey, Woodstock & Altamont, and they recorded their landmark Surrealistic Pillow album at the RCA Victor Studios  in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Grateful Dead are a San Francisco band too, but I couldn't possibly consider leaving them out of the listings (on Page 2 of this blog) Smile

Yes; by the time of Surrealistic Pillow, there was no recording studios yet in Frisco - surprising as it may seem. At least that's what Tamarkin said in his Got A Revolution book

THE BAND       A Canadian-American Roots Rock band, formed in Toronto, Ontario in 1967, consisting of Canadians Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, Robbie Robertson and American Levon Helm. The Band first gained recognition as the backing band for Bob Dylan in the late 1960's, but it's the legendary Last Waltz concert in 1978 - directed by Martin Scorsese - for which The Band will always be remembered. Roger Waters once famously declared The Band's debut album "Music from the Big Pink" to be the second most influential album in the history of Rock - after Dark Side of the Moon, obviously. Tongue
