People seem to choose whatever bass player is in their favourite bands; how about someone who's a better bass player but who happens to play in a less important (or not so good!) band? Or maybe in a good band, but not one you like?
The obvious ones who come to my mind are:-
1. Jack Bruce
2. Greg Lake
3. Chris Squires
4. John McVie
5. Ian Ellis

1. John Entwistle - I'd never call him a prog bassist, but other people put him in their lists so I guess it's okay 2. Colin Hodgkinson - no words to describe 3. John Glascock - somebody Glenn Hughues should have looked up to 4. any King Crimson bassist (Greg Lake incl.) 5. Lee Jackson - as long as he doesn't sing he's just amazing

The problem with threads like this is that they get annoyingly predictable.
