You are a true progressive rock fan. Wanting a band but despising the commercial. Hemispheres is a great album my favorite and A Farewell To Kings, two great albums. Rush should have stayed here a bit longer but they did not. I would go for these two albums. They are the albums I play the most. YYZ is a great instrumental (as all Rush instrumentals are) La Villa Strangiato on Hemsipheres is a great instrumental. Better than YYZ, imo.

Circumstances is the only "weak" track if you can even call it that. If you like that, maybe try A Farewell to Kings, with the excellent Xanadu and epic Cygnus X-1 (beware: cheese alert) and a few more straightforward in between tracks

try Hemispheres, it has a better/more progressive sound than 2112 (at least the other nontitle tracks) and it doesn't have the commercialness of Moving Pictures/Permanent Waves....their second best album IMO  its a 4 track album, the title track being 20 min, the next 2 being somewhat normal tracks (though The Trees is great) and La Villa Strangiato is possibly their best instrumental, clocking in at 10 min

I love the "Art Rock" genre, though it's the vaguest genre there is....I like to think of "mostly dark prog with symphonic leanings on occasion"
bands I love-
Rush
King Crimson
The Mars Volta
Radiohead (please don't bring up the 'they're not prog' debate there here get over it)
Van der Graaf Generator
bands I like-
dredg
Gentle Giant (I probably need more by them)

I agree. I love the late 70's (also earlier) Rush Albums, they're at the top of my list. I don't get the hype over Moving Pictures, it seems like just a good semi-progressive stadium rock album. The songs on the first side are WAY over-played on classic rock radio. Whenever they play Rush, it's always Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Red Barchetta and occasionally the Spirit of Radio. I like Permanent waves and Signals, as well as later 80's material (just a little, though). I think on Permanent Waves they still had prog influence especially in the lyrics, but by Moving Pictures a great amount of that influence was gone.

I like the first... a great debut actually. The nice thing about GG.. pick any of their first...err.... any of their prog albums (with possible exception of Interview) and you really can't go wrong. For what it's worth Three Friends is my favorite, and usually recommend Octopus to start.

I think all genres have their history of vintage to contemporary, clasic to strangely reformating, no? Examples are many.
The idea of Gentle Giant being classic and 70s prog fit, while the Mars Volta have (I don't know how they sound, but can only anticipated) the modern shape and the rush for phenomenons is less important than the fact that Art Rock, like all genres, can comprise different aspects (most especially Art Rock since it is named as a genre of different kinds).
The idea of mixing all styles and periods by a common expectancy is, naturally, weird, nonetheless it's a sure deal.
A genre of Modern Prog is certainly something exclusivist, which none of the current "genre" practiced.

Art Rock is the genre that is most fought over here on PA. No surprise here cause so many different bands are in that genre. The obvious like GG, KC. Rush and VDGG. Just stroll around the genre and delve into bands like The Tangent, Tiles, Uriah Heep, Pavlov's Dog, Yezda Urfa, Gnidrolog, Areknames, Nemo and Adrian Belew just to name a few.
