Topic: Prog "Masterpieces" that you couldn't get into Posted: July 10 2017 at 13:27 |
Tbh anything by Marillion. They seem to have a huge following but I find most of their music to either be boring or derivative. They seem to be a band based heavily on exploiting nostalgia rather than making original music. I've listened to many of their albums from all their different eras and it just doesn't do anything for me.

If a track or album doesn’t please me in the slightest, then
I certainly don’t and can't consider it a masterpiece… as a result, there's no prog
masterpiece I dislike.

I'm having a hard time listening to Crime of the Century, essentially because it feels like a mildly more complex Elton John and I never liked Elton John in the first place. I also hated The Raven that Refused to Sing, even though Luminol is amazing - more specifically its first four minutes.

People often refer to "Dark Side of the Moon" as a masterpiece. I've never been able to get into that, though I really enjoy all the Pink Floyd albums prior that.

Relayer & Topographic Oceans. I like Ritual but that album as a whole didn't really work for me. Same with Relayer, it has moments put overall not my favorite. ( & love Yes , go figure)

Every song on King Crimson, ITCOTCK, is wonderful to me - except: "Moonchild: The Illusion." The first part, "Moonchild: The Dream," is a marvelous Greg Lake ballad; the second Illusion part, however, is Fripp paying homage to John Cage (or something like that) - very difficult for me to ever get into. Other than that, the album is a stellar prog masterpiece...

Ah, the unloved "Moonchild"! I love the instrumental part of it. Each line of the lyrics is reflected in this part.

100% for me, I can't stand anything except for Animals.
But ironically I love Roger's Pros and Cons and especially Amused to Death

Oddly Brave is the only Marillion album that ever stuck for me

jethro tull And Rush. God, Rush. They have completely ridiculous stories for concept albums and their totoxipsuedo-intellectual Ayn Rand worshipping makes them a can't listen.

Came into Yes a bit late (1974 - with the 'Relayer' album). Then, I started the backwards catch-up: Time and a Word; The Yes Album; Fragile; Close to the Edge. All of these, IMHO, were, and still are, great. Then, I got Tales of Topographic Oceans and, I thought - well, that will take several times to finally get into. Here I am 42 years later, and I still cannot get into ToTO. The last great Yes album for me was Going for the One because Tormato was, and still is, abysmal...
|
It took me from 1974 (when I bought it) until about 1978 to fully appreciate what YES was doing on Tales. I probably listened to it every single day for almost five years to "get it" and when I (finally!) did it was like a lightning bolt hit my heart. I still carve out 80 minutes a month for it. And the Steven Wilson remix is outstanding.
I still don't understand death growl Opeth. The last three records are great but I don't care for the Cookie Monster vocals. At all. (See Crimson's Edge Of Sanity.) Great music, horrible "singing."
Marillion's Brave is another one I don't really love. But I adore Marbles. Go figure.

I could name a lot of Bands that I don´t get or like (e.g. Steven Wilson, King Crimson, Soft Machine, etc.), but lets rather mention albums I don't like which are considered masterpieces by bands I generally am found of. Yes - Relayer Spock´s Beard - Snow Jethro Tull- Aqualung Genesis - The lamb lies down Dream Theater - The Astonishing (well some call it a masterpiece other call it a total failure) Seven Steps to the green door - Fetish Rush 2112 (it don´t dislike it totally, but there are at least 10 Rush albums I like much more) | At first listens I thought I found some interesting elements on The Astonishing that would make me like some songs... but now that I have heard it more times, I'm thinking I won't really find something to really like. I do believe this album should have been released as a Petrucci solo album with a bunch of guest vocalists... or as a complete opposite, I believe if Portnoy had been involved he might have helped to make it a much greater album.

I've had exactly the same experience with IQ to tell you the truth. Occasionally they do something I find interesting or exciting, but it mostly just washes over me. Much prefer Arena and Marillion for my neo-prog fix.
Also, forgot to add that the supposed prog classic that I didn't vibe with would be Days of Future Passed by The Moody Blues. I adore the hit Nights in White Satin, I think that's an amazingly emotive and powerful song, but the rest of the album bored me half to sleep. Oh well.
