Topic: PFM Vs. Gentle Giant Posted: March 02 2018 at 09:22 |
I like'em both
Probably would've voted for GG if there was no "both" option.

Quite surprised to see PFM trailing like that.
Gentle Giant display more talent and creativity but PFM is perhaps the symphonic rock band that has produced the most melodically gorgeous music ever. PFM it is.

PFM at their prime were better than GG, but they released a LOT of garbage after Jet Lag. GG was more consistent, so it's a tie.

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

Gentle Giant is my favorite band, so it should be no surprise.
PFM is right up there, though!

Hmmm....I went with equal. I don't play either band all that much but to my ears PFM is certainly more melodic and accessible. GG is one of those bands where I think the playing and concepts are good and interesting but the music is often not that likeable.

I have to admit it's really close for me and I almost went with "both are equal." However, I ultimately chose Gentle Giant. They are one of the most unique and interesting bands of all time. Not many bands could pull off some of the things that they did.

Not a really big fan of either of these bands but GG has some material that blows me away in the right moment. Other than that, I can appreciate both bands intellectually but emotionally they're just not the right fit for me.

Easily GG. What I've heard from PFM has been very up and down.

Really? I thought the melodic beauty of bands such as Le Orme and the admittedly lesser known acts like Celeste, De De Lind, Campo Di Marte mm... would be perfect.
- Back on topic: although Storia di un Minuto is as wonderful as progrock gets I guess my own vote goes to GG for a much larger quantity of top quality work.

LÍsola/The world is high quality PFM. Amico and Chocolate are reasonably good but not classic imo Giant are one of the best. Better than Genesis, Yes and Crimson
|
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

RPI is generally a genre which does not do much for me, but I do like a lot of PFM.
Twenty years ago I loathed Gentle Giant: I just didn't get them at all. Then they just clicked and I now love them. So GG for me.
