Topic: Porcupine Tree vs The Mars Volta Posted: March 26 2018 at 13:46 |
^ Oh man, I had not been considering seeing him again in a while, since I saw him on his Raven tour, and was really excellent... but the music he had been playing was excellent, he played the whole Raven and the best from this previous two albums, and since the albums he did after were not so good, I did not expect his new shows to live up to what I already saw, so I prefered to choose some other bands to see. Now it seems it might be worth seeing him again (not that I ever though it wasn't worth seeing him again, anyway).

A good sprinkling of PT tracks too - with "Arriving Somewhere...", "Lazarus", "Even Less", "The Sound of Muzak", "Sleep Together", "Heart Attack in a Lay-By" and "The Creator Has a Mastertape" complementing a good choice of solo stuff too. The guy seems to be getting a sense of humour these days too....all is well with the World! |
This is good to know. Seeing him in May, I suspected with his latest pop laden effort he would need to throw in quite a few PT and SW "prog" songs to keep fans in their seats . He played Sleep Together the last tour and I really enjoyed the more metal version. Arriving Somewhere will be a treat for sure!

PT easily for me......as someone else said above one of the best modern prog bands and those who disparage Wilson have rocks in their head and wax clogging their ears. ;) But then I don't get the love for some other artists so there ya go.

Thinking out loud here and gratuitously reminiscing.
I'm not a fan of either, but I have heard music by both that I appreciate (I have bought albums by both in my early trying to modernize my tastes phase not that long before joining this site, and neither did I like but later on I found some music that I do quite enjoy). It was discovering Miriodor that initially changed my mind that "modern" Prog can be as good as classic era music, then U Totem....
I started with In Absentia by Porcupine Tree and I disliked it. I started with De-Loused In The Comatorium by The Mars Volta and disliked it. In both cases I preferred the subsequent album, which was in each case the next album I heard. I think I'd choose Frances The Mute over Deadwing. I prefer earlier PT material (early to mid 90s) to later stuff. No vote, though, as neither did I become big on and I feel like I haven't heard enough of either's discography or heard it recently enough to vote fairly.

Watching while most appreciating a sunset in the moment need not diminish all the glorious sunsets I have observed before. It can be much like that with music for me.

Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

Even though I started the poll I won't vote. I know most of PT's material but very little TMV. Still, I think I prefer PT by a pretty wide margin.

Porcupine Tree for sure. Never been a fan of The Mars Volta, but PT is one of my favorite modern day prog bands.

ditto. My wife loves the group.. and through repeated listens.. I've tried.. I mean I should enjoy it.. it is more up my stylistic alley that SWilson was... but like you.. it never clicked. At there is at least one SWilson..err..PT album I really really do enjoy.. so an easy vote.
