BSS !
Two random guys agreed to shake hands. Just Because. They felt like it, you know. It was an agreement of sorts...a random agreement.

Can't disagree with that, although Toccata is far better (and crazier) on WBMFTTSTNE - how they ever managed to perform that live I will never know.

well..  to be honest...  with the exception of Cream.. ELP was probably the best collection of pure musical talent rock had ever seen.  It took balls to do something like that on BSS.. it took legendary skill to duplicate that.. even top it live.  I was too young obviously to catch them in their heyday but not young enough to have not run with those that did catch them and in the opinion of many.. of all the shows they saw.. tours.  LZ, the Who, the Stones ...  many have said that the 74 tour was the single best tour and shows they ever saw.

Yeah I've got the bootleg box sets and ELP were incredible at that time. The show from Springfield is really something else especially Pictures. I wonder if any budding musicians just saw this and thought 'f**k it I might as well give up now'!

They had a guy called Carl Palmer apparently.Big smile Most synths on that track are played through his custom drum synthesiser. He even demonstrated on a Blue Peter show in the seventies . I've seen the footage but not sure where (maybe Y/T) . When they did it live , Emerson would go off stage just to prove that it was Carl playing a lot of it!

The long guitarsolo on Father of Day/Father of Night is so stunning, dynamic and bold, how the strings are bendt to the accents and melodic and distinct very rocking solo that melts iron.

BSS is BSS. That's all there is to it. It has "Toccata" and it has "KE9." BSS is one of the Greatest Prog Records. ELP would never again attain such dizzying heights, but they didn't really need to, did they? They laid it all out for everyone to see...in a musical sense, Keith was the ultimate exhibitionist of his time. He defined the term "lead keyboardist."

Solar Fire is very tasty, and to its credit, very different. But BSS is BSS.

There's 'magnificent keyboarders'...and then there's Keith. There's 'stellar singing'...and then there's Greg. There's whatever a 'driving bear/beat/beat fruit' is...and then there's Carl.

ELP for me, please.

Strange choice of albums to compare.

BSS is technically mind blowing, but it wouldn't bother me if I never heard it again. I enjoy Solar Fire more, so it gets the vote. Neither album is the best by either band IMO.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!
