Still Life has a bunch of highlights... illustrious acoustic guitar passages (i.e. Benighted), some twisted riffing (opening riffs of Godhead's Lament or Serenity Painted Death, reminds me of Morbid Angel), crushing death metal laid on intricate tapestries (The Moor) and top notch growls, elite tier really... add to that very convincing, fluid songwriting, awesome solos and you end up with five star prog/death album.

But the latter is even more, I dunno, consistent and pwning. All songs kick ass consistently and there is even more riffing that sticks, I think. And the atmosphere, while Still Life was more angry and tearjerking, Blackwater Park marries majestic melodies with really damp, sinister, swampish sound, and is always on point! I have to give it a nod. Oh, and it was a gateway Opeth album for me, or at least appealed to me much more than Still Life when I first listened to it.

So yeah, nothing has changed this time around Big smile at least the gap is tiny these days.

Tough one, have to hand it to BWP however as that album got me into the band and opened my eyes to so much music. Godheads Lament, Leper Affinity and the Moor are my favorite songs between the two.

There is one thing I really do not get. Why did you have to make 5 (!!!) different polls for the catalogue of just one band???
And moreover, you add just two or three options in each poll... Makes no sense. One poll with all albums could have worked better and clearer.

It serves a purpose Sir. With all albums lumped together, I already know the winners.
Second, I broke down their discography in order to have "comparable" albums pitted against each other, at least that's how I see it (it's hard to compare Morningrise and, say, Heritage).
Also, there is a chance I will learn more here from you, if we give all albums more attention Smile

I can see your point but I had to ask because it felt spammy, I agree that Opeth have a very diverse catalogue (and thank Mikael they do!).

all polls are fine
One Poll with all albums won't solve anything, Opeth has got three phases in their career, the early death metal, they were influenced by Edge of Sanity and Katatonia (and I'm sure many others in the death-doom world, I'm no expert), then the more polished progressive death metal phase and the growl-less prog they are doing since Heritage.

^ I also had a long break from any Opeth, at least as long as you had (I checked In Cauda Venenum last year tho). But for the last two weeks or so, it's Opeth all the time in my speakers, just a November thing I guess Smile

Still not made my mind between these two, I'm leaning towards Blackwater Park traditionally, but I need more spins this week...
