Robert Calverts Captain Lockheed & the Starfighters is pretty weird but I like it a lot. The track “Hero with a wing” is great.

I suppose it's more psych than prog although maybe proto prog fits but the United States of America album from 1968 is pretty weird. Very good but very weird even for a psych album.

For Pink Floyd their weirdest album is Ummagumma (particularly the studio side). The title track to Atom Heart Mother is pretty weird too (the middle part especially) but overall I still say Ummagumma is their weirdest. For King Crimson I say Islands is their weirdest.

An Evening With Wild Man Fischer.

A protege of Frank Zappa (who produced the album), until he threw a bottle at Frank one day and almost hit Frank's daughter, Moon. Fischer was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and manic depression, and spent time on and off in state hospitals. And yes, the album sounds like someone who needs to go back on his meds.

A little earlier I listened to First Utterance by Comus. That's still one of the weirdest ones for me. Not everything on it is weird but a lot of it is.

Definitely Eno and Byrne's "My Life in the Bush of Ghosts" for me.

I bought it when it came out not and was unprepared for what I was getting into. The situation was exacerbated by a hearty beef stroganoff with plenty of fresh mushrooms.

My friends and I listened after consuming the stroganoff and settling into a certain kind of groove. We couldn't believe our ears. The next morning we listened again to see if our nutritional choice had influenced our perception of the music.

We were relieved to realize that the album is totally original, delightfully weird, and that our nutritional choice merely contributed to mutual good feelings of warmth, friendship, and jocularity.

Every 4-5 years I dig Robert Plant's Shaken'n'Stirred album out of my collection and give it a spin. I've had this album since it was released (40 years now!) and while no one would classify this as avant-garde material, I remain utterly amazed that he would put out an album so drastically different from anything he'd ever done before. There's loads of guitar-synth, electronic percussion, and female vocals, but it can't rightfully qualify as an "80's" album without saxophones/horn sections. It's bizarre, it's fun, and still weird after all these years!

^ Yes, nearly the NWW list, lol!  My gateway to weirdness was Slapp Happy/Henry Cow's 'Desperate Straights'.  Imagine the impact that had on a 12 year old who was into Free and Deep Purple!

This was pretty weird in a good way, as I recall. Long time ago.

Yeah, must have been you.
As for me, I do listen to Chinese music now and then... But the Chinese music I'm used to has nothing to do with this at all! I rather know Cantonese varietés pop (see from this channel typically Michael Ip - YouTube), plus Black Panther, which is regular vanilla rock - a friend of mine gave me their first album, which I really liked; recently I've listened to their next albums, and I feel like there is no real magic in there, they lost their rocky energy, and the lyrics are as vanilla as they were, if not more - I love you, don't leave me etc.

It's super weird. I think I kinda like it, but I'm not sure.

I guess that was from me. It’s an album that I really appreciate but would not expect most to, especially not so much from those who mostly appreciate melodic prog. I was primed for it by getting into quite a lot of post-industrial and darkwave music over the past several years, I like various Chinese music, and I am someone who has leaned into more experimental music avenues for many years. When it comes to music, I find one thing leads to another, and whether something clicks with me depends on the stage of my journey. Sometimes just being intrigued at first can be enough. I definitely favourite some variety in my art habits.

Whatever Faust did with Faust Tapes. They aren't even proper songs, blurring the lines as to what can be construed as music. And unlike the esoteric examples listed here, like Trout Mask Replica and Tago Mago which can be an acquired taste sometimes[ and appreciated for what they are, I like Can :p], some of Faust's work can never be enjoyed in the conventional sense.

If you want to dive into something really very weird, try out Berlin band Die Tödliche Doris!

(You can basically try any of their albums.)

Hi,

Kinda weird to see that ... a lot of her whisperings and sounds would also be done for a baby .... and if you met her in person, she was not exactly a new age woman, but a serious feminist that lived her life the way she wanted, regardless ... and her work on GONG and her solo albums, show her quality ...

I, personally, do not think folks are "weird" ... for its sake ... unless you are talking about AL ... but even that is more satire than it is anything else.
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!
