Subterranea was my favourite album for a while and even got to see the band perform it in its entirety in London back in the day. Nowadays very rarely listen to it. I lost interest in Marillion around The Strange Engine but then did buy Marbles based on recommendations here but havent played it much. I know a litlle bit about the other bands but havent played them much. I often think that IQ and Arena are the only traditional neo prog bands I feel that invested in and enjoy that much. IQ have long been a favourite of mine although they've had some rocky moments and if Nicholls hadn't returned they would have been dead and buried a long time ago. Arena were one of the prog revival bands of the 90's and arguably only Dream Theater and Spocks Beard were more succesfull at that time. They captured the more powerful sound that was needed to move the neo thing onwards. I like their last album a lot but have still never seem them live which is a shame and probably my fault no doubt.

You can never have too much Neo Prog. I've been on a British Neo Prog marathon for the last six months, having listened to 120 artists and 550+ albums, and here are some of the best albums that Neo Prog has to offer between the years 2000 and 2019. Who says Neo Prog was over by 1987? ![]() |

Neo Prog is not my thing, but there are some really good albums on the list.
I voted Subterranea and also enjoy some tracks from Marbles (Neverland, specially). Thanks to this poll I got into the germans Sylvan and liked Posthumous Silence.

IQ- Subterranea. It's their greatest masterpiece and one of the best neo-prog albums ever.

Marbles is by far the best out of the 6.
Actually, one of my all-time fave albums (top 50).

Marbles is the only CD album I own out of the six albums in the poll. I picked up a second-hand copy of Marbles from Langley Mill Records early last year for the bargain price of £6, leading me to wonder if the unknown person who gave the album away to the record store for a pittance had gone and lost their Marbles.

I voted for Pendragon, even though none of these records is on the top of my list.

I appreciate your thoughts. My original list put the focus on the things you mentioned. I mean if it didn't sound like 80's NeoProg then your not on it. I have decided with all of my sub-genre lists to be more inclusive but I agree Citizen Cain and Cyrus are Neo Prog 101.

I thought Marbles would blow this poll up. I still remember hearing Ocean Cloud for the first time, out on my deck of all places. I originally had the one disc version because the two disc was sold out and there's no Ocean Cloud on the single disc. Really disappointing at the time until the double was re-issued years later. |
