Excellent choices, but the list cannot be complete without Group 1850:
Clearly a parallel group to Pink Floyd, Agemo's Trip to Mother Earth is taken from the same cloth as Saucerful of Secrets. In retrospect, though, Group 1850's work is more creative which one may expect from a Continental band without any commercial restraints. Sure, there are some pure psych moments to be had - but just hearing the title track should put anyone in awe who can hear this is an historical perspective. There just flat out wasn't anything like this in 1968. The fuzz guitar, the trippy voices, the acid induced phased effects, and the drumming (oh - the drumming). It's a bona fide masterpiece in the field of psychedelic progressive music. (Tom Hayes, 2001, Gnosis) Paradise Now is possibly even better. Now they've managed to lose the trendy psychedelic trappings for a truly creative work. There is a more pervasive ethnic element this time around with wind instruments and hand percussion. It's amazing how timeless this music is 30+ years later. Just brilliant.

Jefferson Airplane - Bless Its Pointed Little Head or Surrealistic Pillow Grateful Dead - Live Dead (opens up with a really trippy Dark star > St. Stephen) Vanilla Fudge is also kinda cool. They took pop songs and did these psychedelic remakes. Their version of "You Keep Me Hanging On" is fantastic.

Wonderful album. Da Capo from '66 is equally great, and really more psychedelic. |

Has anyone mentioned the band called Love?
I found it in the 60/Psych section of a second hand shop and I want to know something about this band, if anyone knows anything about them. Edited by progismylife - February 03 2007 at 18:10 |

Several people have mentioned the "United States of America" album, but I also love the
followup "American Metaphysical Circus", credited to Joe Byrd & The Field Hippies (Byrd was synth
player, singer & composer for USA)...
13th Floor Elevators
White Noise
Kaleidoscope (both bands, American and British)
Nirvana
Bubble Puppy (Texas Psych with top 25 hit "Hot Smoke and Sassafras")
Gandalf
early Deep Purple
...and don't forget Spirit (although calling them Psych is almost an insult; they're that & more!!)
Fever Tree (criminally underrated; first album is classic, second is also good)
I got the Nuggets on 3 separate CD's years ago, then they released that box with extra stuff.
Some folks don't like comp's, but there are so many psych bands that had just one hit or one
good song, like Balloon Farm ("A Question of Temperature").

Hmmm...Definitely gonna have to find that Acid Eater album. Japanese psych is usually pretty fun.

Here's two you can start off with Christine 23 Onna Acid Eater Braen's Machine Underground (Edit: the image fell out) Exploito psych monster rarity. Recorded by Piero Umiliani at the now legendary SOUND-WORK-SHOP studio in January 1971. Release in a very limited (less than 100) library only release on Umiliani's LIUTO label. The original vinyl is practicaly impossible to find, as far as i know there is no reissue. Acid Drenched Fuzz guitar with one funky rhythm section. The drum sound its pretty interesting. The style is not far from other ghost-groups of the same period, instrumental music that could be used as a film soundtrack, with fuzz guitar and keyboards to the fore, and probably more psych-oriented than others. It's certain that behind the name Braen's Machine hid Umiliani himself and Alessandro Alessandroni, as they appeared with their nicknames Braen and Gisteri as the album tracks composers. Children of One: Children of One. Brilliant album from USA '69, Its something like a trippy avant-psych. Easier to get into than Third Ear Band, but no guitars and it doesn't rock.

Wonderful album. Da Capo from '66 is equally great, and really more psychedelic. Twink: Think Pink '70 This must be the ultimate fuzzed and stoned psychedelia album ever. The Tea Company: Come and Have Some Tea with the Tea Company '68 This is a great forgotten psychedelia gem. Never reissued. All info I could find was this lukewarm review. But instead of reading about it, you can get it here. Omnibus: omnibus '70 This is also brilliant. Beauregard Ajax: Dear Priscilla '67 |

I'm definetely going to second United States of America, what an amazing album, and express my indignation that as far as I can tell noone has mentioned Love - Forever Changes. What gives? That's quite a magnificent album as well.

Cream are a great band but they aren't very 'psychedelic'. I think of them as more of a hard rock band, more like Zeppelin. Still groundbreaking stuff though.

The United States of America album is pretty incredible and pretty much essential. Tons of stellar electronics, great vocals, and overall a vital album to any psychedelic collection. Not perfect, but definetely an interesting and fun album that is an excellent addition to your collection.
