Well I guess that's what you do, but if you really like a band then you'd buy there cd.

I strongly agree with this accusation, because LimeWire just defeats the whole purpose of cd's itself.
And besides wouldn't you rather buy a cd with the art work and original case then downloading it and burning it on a regular cd.

First, I must say that Neil Peart has proven his talent. His drumming stands for more than just hitting the skins. Portnoy sometimes misses in on flirting with the symbals. I need more subtilities on a drum to appreciate a drummer. The way the twist of the wrist will make the tip of a drum stick hit the skin can make the goose bumps happen and have a drum sound like you've rarely heard it. That to me makes all the difference... I also like someone that can express feelings by applying different techniques... At this instant, the name GAVIN HARRISON is what's getting me going!

I love bruford myself, but who can question the great skill of neil purt? Does Jamie muir, the percussionist on king crimson's larks' tongues in aspic count? (joking, but that guy was awesome!)

It was probably Peart who inspired me the most (in my drummer years), although Collins was the very first prog drummer I have heard, second was Bruford. So I would tend to choose these as my top, but all of them and any others that were mentioned here, I respect. They are all amazing drummers (mostly compared to my level ).
As for who is the best? Impossible to tell. Depends on taste, and the time of day .

my personal top 3 are Pierre Moerlen, Christian Vander and Mani Neumeier. for those who don''t know Neumeier, I recommend to listen to "God's Endless Love for Men", one of the mp3 examples of Guru Guru. anyone who belittles Collins, by the way, should listen to the albums of Brand X, where he can really show what he is able to do

Neil Peart's work with Rush is overall the best progressive rock drumming to date. It fits perfectly with the music, yet pushes the drumming envelope in many respects. Neil is able to play a lot of notes and incorporate new ideas without ever overstepping his boundaries. And live, he just delivers plain and simple.
Bill Bruford is definitely a better drummer and by far the best on the original list posted...(people putting PHIL COLLINS over Bruford was my laugh for the day thx!). as a drummer, I find Bruford's jazz work to overshadow much of what he's done with Crimson and Yes.
but as far as strictly progressive music goes I think Peart and Mike Portnoy have both contributed more in their albums, in part due to the songwriting and other talents in their bands.

I not telling you to go to limewire (and I agree it's killing music), i was merely suggesting a place (and the only place I could find) to get a MP solo. Also, LimeWire isn't all bad, they're how I discovered Dream Theater.

You can hear a solo by mike portnoy on either the DVD Images and Words live in Tokyo, or on LimeWire they have a solo by him if you type in dream theater mike portnoy.

Wow. Charlie Watts and Neil Peart, similar? Except for just now, I have never even uttered their names in the same sentence. I agree with your assessment of Watts, but Peart is so far ahead of Watts that to compare them is nothing short of blasphemy, you blasphemer you.
Anyway, my top three would be:
1. Peart
2. Collins (ok, now I will probably be accused of blasphemy as well)
3. Bruford

I think Peart gets too much praise. He reminds me of Charlie Watts and just keeps a steady beat but nothing more. And his drum solo is nothing more than a 'beer run'.
1. Palmer
2. Bruford
3. Corzs
4. Bonham
5. Portnoy

In all time Peart of course. But Brufford and Palmer are both fantastic. They are the three more importants to Prog Rock because they still there since the beginning and influences so many drummers like Portnoy for example who is a great drummer too and maybe the best of new generation.
