Topic: The Bedlam in Goliath favorite song Posted: March 27 2008 at 13:55 |
After listening to the album a few more times, I can say I like Ilyena more!

I have to disagree with this. They have been getting less accessible with each subsequent album. The first two albums were much more melodic and harmonic than the past two. Bedlam is loaded with dissonant vocal harmonies and guitar/sax riffs/solos, bombastic drums, vocal effects and so on. It's like they are trying to be inaccessible. I think the fluidity only has an effect on how quickly you get through the album, or how quickly it seems, rather. No doubt The Bedlam feels shorter than it is because of this, but I think you need to get into the sound before that really matters.
I still think the band does their best in the areas where Cedric is singing naturally (no effects, and without his often ridiculous harmonies), the bass and drums lock into a groove and the general dissonance is contained. This occurs in the mid-section of Metatron, most of Goliath, the second half of Agadez, most of Ouroborous, Soothsayer and Conjugal Burns. I don't think all of the crazy parts are bad, but they certainly don't have the same sheer power. There is just too much chaos to handle a lot of the time for it to have much of an emotional effect on you. I still love the band and their recent work, but I definitely feel like they are their best when they don't overdo it.

Really? I thought that was the worst thing they've ever recorded.

"Goliath," I guess. That's a pretty sweet track; I recall some reviewer said there were remnants of "Schizo" in that song, and I can hear why he said it.
"Metatron," of course, has the added benefit of some real emotion (from the Volta no less) in the "Maybe I'll break down" line, and I'm rather fond of the album's opener and closer. But "Goliath" for the win.

Goliath stood out the most for me, so I'll vote for that.. I like the first 5 tracks quite a bit, but can't enjoy the rest as much. I'm probably too exhausted to pay much attention after Cavalettas or something

right now i canīt choose a favourite song, I can choose one that pleases me most - Ilyena ! the whole album works really good as a single piece, expcep for 2 songs, wich we all know wich ones!
In the end I really think Its the 2nd best Mars Volta album, and Itīs probably a candidate to one of the best 2008 prog albums!

Wow, the only 2 songs I like in here have no votes "Soothsayer" and the opener.
Soothsayer is the most listenable one, even if it is repetitive (it plays the same motif for about 90-105 times), so I voted for it.

Toss-up between Metatron, Askepios, and Conjugal for me...I do agree that Tourniquet Man is the worst thing they've ever done, but otherwise they have yet to disappoint me.

Conjugal Burns is the best, it ends the album so good

In case some of you didn't knew, Goliath is a remake of Rapid Fire Tollbooth from Omar's solo album "Se Dice Bisonte, No Búfalo". I find the song on Mars Volta's album much more enjoyable than on Omar's album since it's much faster and aggressive, and it has that tasty second part of the song which Rapid Fire Tollbooth lacks.
I'm not a big fan of the album, but my favorite song ever since I first listened to it was Goliath so my vote goes to it.

It is always constantly changing...which is why I like this CD a lot. Goliath is always near the top...so I will go with that one.

I actaully really really like Cavalettas...my only problem is one section where the riff repeats a little too much...don't know my current favorite

I'll be the first to vote for Metatron, but there is a lot of quality songs on here, and I dont think a single week song (yes, I do like Tourniquet Man). |
I might as well clarify my stance on Tourniquet Man and Cavalettas now, too. I like both of the songs, and at least 6 out of 7 times I listen to the record I will listen to them, but often times when I'm in a pinch or I'm sharing the material with someone else I will skip them. No doubt they are not what the band is capable of, but they are not bad.
