Topic: Twenty Epics Since 2000 Posted: June 15 2009 at 18:18 |
I mentioned last time I posted that once I heard K.A. my vote for Sleeping in Traffic would probably disappear...I was right, if I could change my vote, K.A. would get it now. Excellent, excellent piece of music, as I've come to expect from Magma.

I know all of them (although I don't own all of them in my private collection) and I vote the same. IQ, a band that defies the laws of artistic decadence and musical exhaustion, creates a definitive post-70s classic with the epic 'Harvest of Souls'. One ultimate expression of IQ's quintaessence.
Kind regards.

I had to go with KA III (actually the whole album is like a single piece), and I could quibble about the absence of Guapo.
I'd also like to big up Duel with the Devil - I'm not much of a neo fan, and the only one of the 'parent' bands I enjoy even slightly is Fish era Marillion, but for some reason I like Transatlantic and I think Duel with the Devil is up there with the best of the golden era prog epics. Similarly IQ's Harvest of Souls, although I have a soft spot for IQ in any case; it's a bit close to Supper's Ready at times, but Harvest of Souls is another solid prog classic of the noughties for me.
On the other hand, Mind Drive - .

I'm a bit surprised that out of the epics listed by The Flower Kings, 'The Truth will set you free' had the least votes. Just one vote - although I doubled it with my vote I'd always thought that the Flower Kings fanbase rated Truth as perhaps their greatest ever epic. Guess I was wrong. Hmmm

My favorites are: Duel With the Devil - Transatlantic The Truth Will Set You Free - The Flower Kings Love Supreme - The Flower Kings Octavarium - Dream Theater In Earnest - The Tangent Anesthetize - Porcupine Tree
How come The Devil's Playground by The Flower kings isn't listed? That is also one of my favorite epics.

National Health, even though it was recorded in the 70s. Actually, wait... that's exactly why I'm voting for it!

So, I'm re-visiting this bumped poll six months on. There is one BIG change, as I have since then obtained Paradox Hotel.
My choice is now definitely Monsters And Men, for me one of the most amazing pieces of music I've ever heard in my life. Listening to this is an awesome experience for me. I've never known 21 minutes to pass so quickly. I've previously described this piece as Goosebump City, Arizona. I think that's a good description.
Some truly great choices on here though Robert.

I surprised myself by picking DT in a masses of options poll. I love Tetragrammaton as well, but Octavarium is one of the best DT tracks ever.
My favourite, though, would probably be the title track of Overhead's Metaepitome.

Octavarium may be the most well crafted prog rock epic of the 2000s, and maybe most well known, which may make it the Close to the Edge of its time DT has a few contenders like SDOIT, TCOT, ITPOE, AA suite... The Mars Volta one is great, Cassandra Gemini may be better. I like Porcupine Tree, i have to give Anesthetize another listen. Transatlantic, I wouldve picked All of the Above IMO

1) Octavarium (I think it's probably the best epic I know. That's right, better than Supper's Ready and Close to the Edge) 2) The Harvest of Souls 3) Anesthesize

What's the point of a poll like this if I can't come back with more information (since I have more albums)?

Oddly, "The Seventh House" reminds me of "Supper's Ready."

Interesting outcome so far.
So it sounds like the heavy hitters (out of those I don't own) are "Octivarium," "Harvest of Souls," and the one I should have mentioned by Transatlantic.
Can anyone give me more information about "Harvest of Souls" (instrumentation, mood, etc.)?

Robert, how you doing my friend?
IQ, the UK's finest prog band by a mile for me, and one I will be seeing live next month. Harvest of Souls is a really good piece of music but definitely nods a little towards Suppers Ready for me. The 9/8 section is there in all it's glory, just like Grendel. However, Harvest of Souls is much better than Grendel IMHO. It's very symphonic, as IQ always are. The "neo" title is misleading, IQ are symphonic prog, end of story.
The album it is from, Dark Matter, is tremendous overall, but for me Harvest of Souls is the least inspiring track. The first track "Sacred Sound", about 12:30, is much much better, and more indicative of real IQ. It is a brilliant track.

| Harvest of Souls is pretty much a modern representation of Supper's Ready, but this one is really similar, not like Grendel which just had the 9/8 part. This one has that part and many other parts. It's a fine song, sometimes superb, but there's really no originalism, IMO.

The Mars Volta´s Cassandra Gemini, Moonsorrow´s Jäästä Syntynyt / Varjojen Virta and Meshuggah´s I... pitty
