WOW, this is something like a 'name all of Antenna's favourite bands'-thread!
I'll definitely check out the bands named here that I don't yet know about, I get the feeling it might well be worthwhile.
But eh... how come nobody has yet mentioned Anathema? Their (fantastic!) Alternative 4 album surely deserves a mentioning.

Oh yes, I totally agree! Anathema came first on my mind. Then Univers Zero, Art Zoyd, Arachnoid, Henry Cow, Maudlin Of The Well, Kayo Dot etc, etc...

Really? TDM always sounded very somber and melancholic to me, and it does have a very potent emotional effect on the listener - it always leaves me feeling emotionally drained - but it always just seemed too cathartic, too emotional to ever be genuinely depressing. Still my favorite album, though.
By the way, I know Peter Hammill isn't technically a band, but the stuff he did on The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage out-darknesses anything he ever did with VdGG, in my opinion.

Pawn Hearts may be dark, but there is a sense of joy I feel in listening to it, as if you could tell the musicians were having a ball making it. Indeed, the band was often falling over with laughter during playback; not laughing at the music, but rather just hearing how f*'d up it sounded: "What the f* are people going to make of this?"
I never find VdGG depressing. Even the supposedly dark stuff can be uplifting. Plus, they rock (especially from Godbluff on).
