I got into Pink Floyd when I was 15 [Didn't know they were Prog at the time ] 2 years later, my scope has expanded ever-so-much to Queen, David Bowie [Not really Prog, but yeah], The Alan Parsons Project [more Art Rock, i think] Genesis [Peter Gabriel era] & currently in the process of discovering King Crimson

You're only 15? That's a wild avatar for a 15 year old. Prying open the third eye, correct? |

I got into prog music, along with metal, when I was about 11 years old - only I didn't know it was prog back then.

I'm 15 and i can't even remember how i got into prog but i do remember getting heavily into it when the band i joined (Circadian), well their dad, gave me a lifetime of records on 2 discs from the 70s Genesis right up to bands like Porcupine Tree, etc. Good to know im not the only 'weird' kid who doesn't listen to the singles chart!

Hello, I'm not listening to prog so much like classic rock, but I like it. It's much better than other music. I found the way to prog couple of years ago and for this years prog never bored me.(In fact, I'm 15 and I loved this music since I was 7) I listened to Pink Floyd, Yes, Jethro Tull and so on (Are Queen prog ? I don't think so, but I had to write them here, they was my first rock band). But for last year I listen to prog more and more ... and it's still better. From newest I like bands like Beardfish or The Decemberists. People in my life don't understand music so much, but my boyfriend love music a lot, so I can speak about music (and especially prog) with him. Progarchives rulez ! Good to see another young progger like myself. I am 17 and I wish more of my friends understood prog (and I'm not talking about the modern prog bands)

My favourite bands are Pink Floyd, KC, VDGG, FZ, Gabriel-era Genesis, Gentle Giant, Harmonium, Maneige, Rush, Jethro Tull, Yes, ELP, Porcupine Tree, Camel, Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, PFM, Balletto di Bronzo, Museo Rosenbach, Le Orme, etc. In fact I listen to a lot of things and I'm always trying to enlarge my horizons.

I started listening to prog when I was thirteen thanks to my older brothers (they are musicians). Thanks to them I own a great vinyl collection of the genre and a huge addiction to prog.
The more I'm getting older (I'm 28 now)the most I'm looking back to find forgotten LPs, lost gems, live performances , everything relevant, and I'm buing as much new records as possible. Welcome! Same to any young proghead |

To all younger members of PA, I made this group on Facebook for young
people who are interested in Prog! It's very exciting to meet other
young people who are interested in this generally obscure music genre
and now we have a place to do so exclusively. If you're 18 or under and
interested in Prog then please join!

Eh, I don't know if I'll be a musical contributor to that... I'll do some of the album covers and listen intently at least. Hey, at least you already have Devy's approval in a sense.

It's one thing to grow up with prog, but it's an entirely different thing to grow up with ProgArchives.

I'm 14 and got into prog at 13, but apparently I've been listening to DSOTM since I was like 1. I don't really have much prog, maybe 40ish albums. Well, you will probably find all the prog you'll ever want here....

Hmm for me significant moments were:
This is my musical adventure thus far: Pre - My parents constantly played The Beatles and other classic rock... Age 2 - I went to my first concert... Raffi. :P I've since seen hundreds of bands. Age 4 - I became obsessed with Smashmouth (who I also saw at that age). It sounds stupid but they were the first band I was ever truly obsessed with. Age 10 - I saw School of Rock... it entirely changed my life, seriously. My mom bought me AC/DC's Back in Black, this got me into rock. I listened to mostly classic rock back then. I also started to play guitar then. Age 11 - I bought Master of Puppets by Metallica which introduced me to metal. Age 12 - I got heavily involved in Grunge and other metal. Introduced me to the darker side of things. Late 12 - I was into Nu Metal briefly... bad period of musical taste. :P Age 13 - I got into Tool which introduced me to prog (even though I wasn't really aware of it), and to other metal. Age 14 - I started to get into extreme metal... the most significant band being Opeth! Opeth broadened my musical taste so much it's not even funny! I found prog because of them! And they're still my favorite band... I also started to collect CDs and vowed to never buy any music digitally again. Age 15 - I started listening to all different genres of music from minimalist folk to funeral doom metal. I tried to be as eclectic as humanly possible. Age 16 - Pretty much the same as 15 hahaha... I bought my first turntable and began to collect vinyl and now have over 300 LPs... Edited by Jake Kobrin - July 09 2009 at 01:13 |

Pink Floyd and Dream Theater were my first prog influences, as well as Queensryche. In all three cases, I was introduced to those bands by my sister. Queensryche came first. She started to listen to Pink Floyd when she was dating her first boyfriend, I was 14 at the time. Ultimately, her interest in Floyd faded and mine never did. Dream Theater came a couple of years later. I remember listening to "Space Dye Vest" from their album Awake, as I was driving one day, and I must have replayed that song about four times. I really enjoyed the keyboard solos in that particular track.
I love piano and keyboards, and I think that in particular is one reason why I like progressive metal so much. Obviously there is more than that I like, but that's what really got me interested. I didn't really branch out too much for a few years, as I got into a classic rock phase in my college years. I really branched out my prog horizons when I had Rhapsody and Emusic subscriptions for awhile. From there I found so many great bands; Pain of Salvation, Evergrey, Wolverine, Echolyn, etc etc. Favorite Prog CDs: The Perfect Element part one Remedy Lane The Inner Circle Operation Mindcrime Metropolis part II: Scenes from a Memory A little off-track. Oops. Point being, the roots of my prog interests started in my early teenage years with a few key bands, but didn't really branch out until I was about 22. |
