Frank Zappa has at least 25 masterpieces, can I use him?  And I saw "Primus" listed....I could never make that claim.  I like Primus but their studio albums are.....eh....way too many 1:00 minute joke songs for me, I despise filler material.  In fact I couldn't call something with ANY filler material a masterpiece.
Which of you to gain me, tell, will risk uncertain pains of hell?
I will not forgive you if you will not take the chance.

Masterpieces?  Since there aren't even 5 albums I would call a masterpiece, this is KINDA difficult, but I'll show who I think got the closest:

Toby Driver:

Bath, Leaving Your Body Map, Part the Second, Choirs of the Eye, and I guess Coyote (even though I think Coyote is by far the weakest link; still an amazingly awesome album, though.

tull:

living in the past
thick as a brick
heavy horses
songs from the wood
bursting out

but the following remasters are just as good with the addition of bonus tracks where you can trim off songs and make an album from each just as good as the above albums:

warchild
benefit
stormwatch
aqualung(5.1 version with songs from living in the past)
stand up

I guess living in past won't count now that all the studio songs will be covered by the first 4 remastered albums. Aqualung 5.1 will probably replace it in the top 5.

According to my ratings none (or maybe I am too strict Embarrassed ?)
King Crimson comes close with four 5-stars, and Yes with four 5-stars, of which two are live albums.

Can't think of any bands with more than five masterpieces (i.e. better than excellent).

I can't think of any. Opeth has one masterpiece. Pain of Salvation and Pink Floyd have two masterpieces. Dream Theater also has only two (Train of Thought and SFaM). Ayreon has three. Who has four? I can't even think of any band that has four. And you're asking "more than 5"?

Maybe you need to reevaluate your definition of "masterpieces". (I admit I misused this word earlier too. I called "When Dream and Day Unite" a "masterpiece". That was not very bright.)

Hard to do... Even when it comes to a band like King Crimson, I wouldn't be able to call 5 of their albums masterpieces although I'm a huge fan. I'd say only Larks and Red are really MASTERPIECES. Maybe the first if you take into account when it was released. Same with Camel, I love early camel, but Moonmadness, although good, ain't no masterpiece. same with the self titled. I'd say Mirage and Snowgoose are, and Rain Dances would be if you ignore the aweful aweful Highway Of The Sun (hard to do since the album has 2 versions of it!)

I could name several bands with 5 really good albums, but masterpieces....

5 really good albums:

Aheulchatistas - The first five
Cephalic Carnage - Exploiting Dysfunctions and onwards
Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating, Ire Works, Option Paralysis, Irony..., Miss Machine (if Ire Works didn't have 3-4 tracks I don't like this could be in the masterpieces category)
Hiromi uehara - All really good albums, so 8 really good, but no masterpieces
Since this isn't limited to prog (anyway the title of the thread doesn't say so) one band comes very close with 4 masterpieces and a decent first album, Jedi Mind Tricks. Visions Of Ghandi, Violent By Design, Servants In Heaven Kings In Hell and Legacy Of Blood are 4 indisputable masterpieces of hip-hop. Their first album has some really good songs, but a few not so good, and the latest one has 4 awesome tracks and the rest really sucks
Mahavishnu has 4 really good albums but they all have tracks i dislike
Miriodor has 6, but same thing, all have tracks I dislike. Couldn't call any a full fledged masterpiece

I tought Rush would be the one band with 5 masterpieces, but I can only give these 4 albums masterpiece status, although Hold Your Fire comes quite close
2112
Hemispheres
Moving Pictures
A Farewell To Kings

Another very close band is Snowgoons. All 5 of their albums are near masterpieces, but I'd only give the nod to A Fist In The Thought and Black Snow (for those who don't know this is another hip hop group)

Stevie Ray Vaughan would be the only band/person to fit the bill if we take into acount genre, meaning that while Texas Flood isn't one of my all time favorite albums, I do conciderate it a masterpiece when Blues is concerned. Same for In Step, Couldn't Stand The Weather, The Sky Is Crying and Soul To Soul

I'm just getting into MAGMA right now. Heard them for over a year but I never got into it til now. Maybe once I go through their discography I'll name them the titledholders when it comes to having 5 masterpieces!

No Sountracks Shocked. Definitely one of my favorite Can albums.

I wouldn't include Soundtracks either, actually...most of it is great, but there are a couple tracks on it I don't enjoy much (the Deadlock tracks, specifically).
