After a good 35 years plus enjoying prog and having built up a substantial collection, so I don't play favorites anymore. It's more of a challenge to make sure everything gets listened to sooner or later and so I have developed rotation and random selection methods to do just that. Of course I'm not so anal about it that I don't whip out an old favorite whenever I feel like listening to it.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I usualy listen to a blend of styles, a blend of old/new, and a blend of "masterpieces" and "less revolutionary" music.
Sometimes i get an urge to listen to everything by "X", and does that for some hours until i get fed up.

Prog is whatevey you want it to be. So dont diss other peoples prog, and they wont diss yours

It depends on my mood. Sometimes when I have nostalgia, I turn on my favorite songs and then feel happy))

^this..."binge listen" is the perfect term to describe what I do too. I'll listen to an album over and over and over...and wonder how I'll ever get tired of it. Eventually I do, then it sits waiting for me to get tired of my new binge favourite and eventually circle back...repeat...

how is that an awful practice? It just makes the album that much more enjoyable when I do play it. |
It doesn't for me. I listened to Choirs of the Eye this morning after about 3 months and enjoyed it a lot, but I'm going to listen to it tomorrow and enjoy it even more for sure. I know because it happened that way the last time too.

Having so many favorites, I'll say it's about once a year maybe twice. But in some cases it's even longer, I haven't listened to Crimson in a few years now and they might be my all time favorite.

I only listen to mine, like Nursery Cryme or Snow Goose, once every 3 months or so. I have a deep fear of over listening to albums , which I have done in the past, and not being able to enjoy them anymore. Anyone else have this fear? Do you even think about this? |
It's like an old friend ... they never left!
I don't look at music any different!
I don't look at the mirror any different!
I don't look at past music, past life, my past ... as anything else other than a part of me. There is no reason to dislike it or think it is different, just because yesterday you saw blue and today you see yellow ... it also tells you that you were/are not focused enough to get into the real meat of the work, so that you would know what it is about, and generally that holds all your life!

at first i'll probably listen to them a handful of times a week, maybe more, but as time goes by, that usually drops to once every 2-4 months or so

Not very often. Grace for Drowning, which is probably my favourite album of all time, I haven't listened to since last year.
