I love Tales - at it's best it is beautiful and so brave - but Darkside is in a league all of it's own........

Stop it with the mismatched poll entries already. 'Floyd packed more into one disc (album) in this case then Yes did with their two-album hodge podge of what might you call it. Every old Yes fan has their favorite parts of Tales', but even with all the substandard sections it has that one could throw out, it still couldn't come close to 'Moon.

The only song I really love from Tales is "Revealing Science of God", "Ritual" gets rather annoying and repetitive. However, I think I do like the version on Yesshows a bit better. Actually, this album indeed might have ended up a bit better if Moraz had already been in the band... he might have been more up to contributing to the album. Or, at the very least, it would have been nice if they had released a live album from that tour, with the whole performance of Tales with Moraz.

Floyd's Dark Side wins here for me. I thought some parts of Tales were quite good like The Revealing Science of God for example, but I just find the album in general doesn't have enough musical substance to sustain my interest. Some of the keyboard work from Wakeman and gutiar work from Howe was quite good, but again this just wasn't enough to keep my mind from wandering away. Dark Side, on the other hand, is a progressive rock masterpiece IMHO.

^Thanks, I'll have to check out that clip. I prefer the Yesshows version too. Sometimes, excess in prog is juuuuust right . . .

Maybe, but Ritual is a very close second to Revealing. How do you feel about the Yesshows version? |
Think Moraz Ritual on Yesshows is way better than original--Moraz really got that symphonic thing down---and on You Tube there is an interesting Moraz version of Side Two--The Remembering----which is taken from a Yes rehearsal back in the 70's--they never played it but Particks version sounds promising even if the sound quality is not very good.

Since I consider "Tales from Topographic Oceans" the worst thing Yes ever did the choice is easy, "Dark Side of the Moon". | You mean, worse than "Union" or "Open Your Eyes"? Boy, you must REALLY hate it. I picked Tales, but neither of these is in my top 3 of either band.

Tales, but Dark Side is very good. Tales is just incredible and one of the reasons I absolutely love prog.

I definitely haven't yet figured out those. But admittedly I'm not trying too hard... I kinda just chocked it up to 70s fantastical prog ramblings.

DSOTM is quite an excellent album, being as accessible as it is, it is easy to wear this one out. TFTO on the other hand, is such an impenetrable work that takes a long time to sink in, and for me, is still plain mind-blowing when I listen to it these days. My vote goes to Topographic.

I voted for the symphonic prog album over the crossover album.
Its so ironic that DSOTM only gets interesting when someone outside of the band contributes an improvised peice. There is some very dull electronic looping and an amazing (not) time change in Money. Time is a great track admittedly. I will occasionally watch the version on Pulse but the album itself has never got above a 3 star album for me.
TFTO has gradually wormed its way into my affections over the years. Of course Wakeman didn't like it as he had very little to do with it creatively. The padding criticism could be levelled at about 90% of symphonic prog I reckon. Sour grapes.

Dark Side. I would throw TFTO in the fire because, as Rick Wakeman said about the album, "we padded it out and the padding is awful." Perhaps the padding would smother the fire. |
Lol--Wakeman--a man of excess talking padding. The only real padding on Tales is on side 2---his keyboard breaks are a little ---well padded sounding. And yes side 4 has sections which there is too much singing and words and sounds padded---but side 1 and 3 are pretty well organized symphonic prog---and it does have some amazing guitar parts from Howe and one of wakemans best keyboard solo's on side 1---but on side 4 wakeman's ritual part is not as good as moraz's live version---guess rick just wasn't into it----most of the other guys were not--which is why anderson-howe gave side 2 to rick, and 4 to chris and alan---to involve them more. But this album you either get or don't--not only the music but the story and lyrics.

DSOTM. Now if the Yes album was CTTE it would have been a different vote from me.
