yes acid folk is an often used term, although I don't know if I would put Pentangle there.

I always refer to albums by bands such as Comus, Spirogyra, Jan Dukes de Grey, The Incredible String Band and Pentangle as acid folk. Acid Folk (aka psychedelic folk) is my favourite folk subgenre generally. I also place the likes of Perry Leopold in there. Edited by Logan - April 28 2014 at 18:30 |

that's not a bad name, or how about twisted folk We do wpeak about wyrd folk a bit but more as a modern sub sub genre. Perhaps Comus and jan Dukes were the godfathers of this style. They might also be considered a very English style of psych folk like Incredible Spring Band, Forest, or Spirogyra (sp?)

I totally agree about First Utterance and Rats And Mice In The Loft being loosely of the same style, and I do always think of one when the other is mentioned. I just thought that was mostly because of my lack of knowledge of this sub-genre but they both seem to be extreme-folk if there was ever a sub-genre called that.

Apart from a few passages I can't listen to, overall I like the Comus album, but Ican certainly see the extreme views. I actually think "Rats and Mice in the Loft" by Jan Dukes de Grey is a lot better than "First Utterance' while very loosely being "in the style of"

Gryphon's album here is one I can't get into at all, easily my least favourite of the three. As Herc and Horizons mentioned already, it's all about one's musical taste.

First Utterance is an album people either love or absolutely hate and I hate it with a passion. As you say, it's just taste.

I like all the albums here, but I'll vote for Comus First Utterance.

I like Strawbs and Gryphon a lot more than Comus, but I see why they're popular. I went with Red Queen but overall I prefer the Strawbs.

Strawbs...........Gryphon.......Comus
Both Hero and Red Queen have quite a bit of non-folk elements...imo.

I can understand why you don't like it. It's just a complete difference of musical tastes.
