Couldn't find this band in the archives. I've always considered them to be prog before they went in search of top 10 hits. I'm talking about early albums like 'ELO 1 & 2', 'Eldorado', 'On The Third Day' & possibly 'Face The Music'?

I guess you don't classify them as prog?

I like them and listen to them once or twice a year but that is all. There are some prog elements in them ... but even less, than, say, in Iron Maiden. It's a good relaxing 70s pop.

I remember when I was about 16, being lent a track called 'From The Sun To The Earth' (I think..someone correct me if I'm wrong) and being very impressed with it... I remember it as being quite proggy. Very talented band all the same, even if they didn't always use it to its fullest potential.

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Interesting ELO gets quickly moved to non prog music! this is rather silly with all the nuero prog out there. Guess the squirrel was out of his box! I was going to use NON PROG for blues, and rock n roll and other stuff, but no telling what response that would bring.

The first 4-5 ELO albums are as progressive rock as most anything in the ProgArchives. I guess because the MOVE was instrumental in the whole progressive movement ELO should be punished for being too good and accessible at it! Who knows, we all know the truth when it comes to ELO, Traffic and the Moody Blues, but those of the Crown like things in a certain order(which they choose!). BLAH! Interesting ELO gets quickly moved to non prog music! this is rather silly with all the nuero prog out there. Guess the squirrel was out of his box! I was going to use NON PROG for blues, jazz, and rock n roll and other stuff, but no telling what response that would bring. cant we leave the ELO's in the generally progressive forum and use this for really NON PROG stuff? If used correctly I think we could communicate some pretty interesting musical stuff here! but then again, I liked the subgenre setup, think you guys reacted way to soon, should have given it a month to soak in!

Early ELO is of course prog, but they went down in the pop-swamp like everybody else. But I'm surprised they aren't on this site. I must say

I enjoy early ELO. And, yes from Face the Music onwards they generally stopped being Prog. However, if side 3 of Out of the Blue was made as 1 song I would certainly class it as a prog contender.

"Why say it cannot be done.....they'd be better doing pop songs?"

Yes, they are much more pop than anything else, I didn't quite like them... Maybe there are some prog elements(like the cello)

"Non-prog" and "pop" are different things, and no good to confuse. ELO have always been sympho-rock - a substyle of prog, as I understand.
