Topic: Genesis, may be overrated? Posted: November 14 2005 at 02:36 |
Hi all of you prog fans! I don't wanna do like those people who say that X group is crap, but I want your opinions about Genesis... Personnaly, I've listened plenty of times to Nursery Crime, Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound, and I do appreciate them... But, comparing to innovative Crimson, ELP, Zappa, Yes, Gentle Giant and Floyd, to mention only them, I think that Genesis didn't explore that much musically and conceptually... But I'm open to suggestions... Submit your opinions, peops

No, Genesis is not overrated...
- They have always had a unique sound that many have tried to copy (but very few have succeeded).
- In their prime they released an unbroken chain of five excellent albums (or Master-pieces if you like) - Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, SEBTP, TLLDOB, ATOTT.
- Many of their albums (Duke, Abacab, Three Sides Live, Genesis... ...The Way We Walk - the Longs, Calling All Stations, Archive # 2) are very underrated and unfairly trashed (it seems like some people tend to trash those albums without even listening to them properly!).

Genesis knew how to creat climaxes and atmospheres and were
excellent composers, their songs didn't ramble or drag along as
some pieces by ELP or Yes did (btw, I don't see Yes as innovators). Of
course it's my personal opinion, whenever I have the time I'll try to
give more reasons to support it.

They were more 'musical' than Floyd, technically speaking...
It's all a matter of taste. If you want your favourite bands to always be experimenting, making strange noises, and hiding their melodies behind a wall of cacophony then dont listen to Genesis. For prog fans who have an ear for melody and feel, Genesis is perfect.

Find yourself a new hobby!!! I'd have to say Genesis had the most
complete integration of lyrical, musical and visual concept of any of those
bands, and went further than any other group or individual in realizing a
concept of rock theater. No other band could tell stories like they did, and
that remains true to this day.

I don't think they broke anything like so much ground as their contempories, but they were nevertheless unique, and did what they did well. If you like them less than most other people do, you'll find them overrated. If you like them more than most other people do, you'll find them underrated.

An excellent band . They had better lyrics and atmospherics than their contempories with less showing off . They had 7 straight prog classics form Trespass to WAW and there are redeeming points in the other albums. Their 7 classics represented great value for money as they usualy ran 50 minutes or so with nothing like the repetition of Yes and others. They integrated better as a group than their contempories also.
On the negative side they weren't as brilliant as Yes or ELP or as accessible as Pink Floyd. Many of their songs are very hard for anyone else to do. Their seeming denunciation of prog in the 80s left a bitter taste in many fans' minds.

I think Genesis is one of the headmaster of prog rock (along with KC, Yes. Camel & PF)
But especially Genesis shows a clever and amazing show performace and one of the most incredible album (i`ll never tired listening nursery or selling), after Gabriel, Collins took all the fame of the group i made an incredible album like "a trick" but in the 80, he poisoned the group
GENESIS IS NOT OVERRATED, IS THE KEY AND THE INTRODUCTION TO LISTEN AND UNDERSTAND PROGROCK.
CHERRIO.
