Calling them the Nirvana of prog metal is unfair. They have all kinds
of technical talent, making them nothing like Nirvana. Their
non-singles (I don't know if they even have singles, actually) actually
sound good, unlike Nirvana. If you're calling them bland, I don't
particularly agree, but that's much more fair that the other
distinctions of being called the "Nirvana" of whatever genre. Thus,
there must be a better example for that type of thing.

Shadow Gallery demolishes Symphony X. I used to love Symphony X, they used to be one of my favorite progressive metal bands, but the more I listen to them the blander they get. Yes, Symphony X has some great songs like Edge of Forever, Divine Wings of Tragedy, and Through the Looking Glass, but the majority of their songs, especially on the later releases are quite bland. Symphony X has never made an album that is progressive and creative as Room V from Shadow Gallery is. Shadow Gallery has more diverse tones, much clearer playing, and much more complex music. |

I assuming you're restricting that to mainstream prog metal there, unless SX have done a lot of stuff that I couldn't imagine them doing

First I think, Symphony X are much more complex and for me Symphony X have the largest longevity ever. I've been into so many progmetal bands but the spirit left after after a while and Symphony X was my first band and I'm still listening to them every day!

I love both bands, but I prefer SG better - their material is more diverse (someone else stated this same notion before me), their instrumental interplaying is more clvere and their musical ideas are more refined.
SG's "Room V" is my fav 2005 prog metal album, but again, I'm having great expectation for SX's next recording. Michael Romeo says that it's going to be darker than previous releases - we'll wait and hear!
Regards

From Shadow Gallery I've only heard "Legacy" and "Carved in Stone", they were quite good but I like Symphony X a lot more and think they (symphony x) are more interesting, IMO!
