and so many other progressive metal bands that are more progressive than Symphony X. I guess Ed is right, i do label SX as the Nirvana of Prog Metal.

Calling them the Nirvana of prog metal is unfair. They have all kinds
of technical talent, making them nothing like Nirvana. Their
non-singles (I don't know if they even have singles, actually) actually
sound good, unlike Nirvana. If you're calling them bland, I don't
particularly agree, but that's much more fair that the other
distinctions of being called the "Nirvana" of whatever genre. Thus,
there must be a better example for that type of thing.

I voted Shadow Gallery, though for me it was a very close poll and part of me wanted to vote for Symphony X

I enjoy both ensembles immensely, but in the end, Symphony X captures my vote. When it comes to drumming, Rullo excels Revolo at such an expansive pace, I can hardly see the comparison, and don't even get me started on Romeo's technique standing against Allman's.
The only real issue here is the two vocalists, at least that I can see. There are times - most times, in fact - that I benefit from hearing Mike Baker than I do Russell Allen, especially in their epic pieces. Baker keeps me enthralled with the worded portion, with the story, than Allen has, and that includes "The Odyssey"; it's a great song, to be sure, and Allen pours his heart out singing it, but matching it up against, say, "First Light," I have to say it's no contest. I just wanted to make sure it was known that I think Symphony X has the better musicians; it's only Shadow Gallery that exceeds in vocalization, but even at that, it's not by much. Allen can still evoke numerous levels of emotion, it's only Baker can evoke more, is all.

Of course there are bands which are complex but most of the bands you mentioned are not as progressive and as diverse as SX...
next time please don't post any bands think about what you write...

You really think so? For me, the biggest negative to Shadow Gallery has always been the vocals. I just don't like Baker's voice. I can't pinpoint why, I just know that something about him doesn't agree with me, like a spicy Italian sausage on a hot summer night.

Thats Nevalo, not Revolo... and Rullo is darn borring.... Nevalo is far more diverse and interesting... heard Joe's Spotlight, Stiletto in the Sand or Manhunt?? Those are some interesting rhythms!
Micheal Pinella is a great keyboardist, but both Inges and Wehrkampf surpass him. More interesting, Symphonic layers(Pinnela's plastic piano comes out pretty dull here, but It might just be the production), more tasty Kevin Mooresque solos, and that awesome feeling in melodies (Pinella also did awesome ones, but he's been pushed back on the newer albums just to do some backing soundscapes).
The bass players are equal, nothing outstanding, just doing their job well (although Cadden-James does a lot of backing vocals and also does some tasty flute parts).
When it comes to guitarist its a matter of taste imo. Although I must give in that Romeo is better technically than Allman and Wehrkampf... Although when you think bout creating melodies and originality vs stagnancy, its a matter of taste
And the vocals... Well, its ma mater of taste also... I just like Bakers deep emotional voice more than Allens... And SG has great multivoice harmonies!
But its ALL a matter of taste, isn't it?

Shadow Gallery for me. I just find their music more interesting and SX tends to have too much guitar w**kery for my taste in prog metal.

Rullo has so many diverse and awesome rhythms and changes. The only problem is you can't hear it so easy, I just noticed it with the bass mode of my player!

Rullo is a GREAT drummer, just does not show off. That may be because S.X. gives a lot of importance to compositional harmony in their music, like classical composers. And in classical music, percussional parts are not very dominant. But a careful listener can notice his greatness in some particular parts...
And be sure, he is again much better than a lot of so called "godly" drummers ;)
Oh please, Russel Allen is much more diverse, and can put different levels of emotion in his voice amazingly. I also like Shadow Gallery vocals, but technically i see this as reality ;)
SG has great multivoice harmonies? Right. Yet again oh you really don't know Sir Russell Allen Ed_The_Dead ;)
