It's a shame that some people tend to judge a band only becouse they don't play 1086 notes per sec.
DSOTM is a completely amzing alboum and for those who have objections there are statements of important musicians for the significant of this album.

You're right. Nothing much but "It's overrated". Small minds...

DSOTM is the single most over-rated album ever. I was so dissapointed when my brother bought it.

It's overrated, yes, at the same time half the music in the "progressive" genre are; going simply on the word of the popular vote, at least.

Utter crap? I don't think so. It is highly emotional, very, very dynamic and it is all the great things from all the albums before it put into one album. The choir from Atom Heart Mother, the songs connecting together like on Echoes, heavy blues songs, their blues style was experimented in the previous albums but perfected in this one. A concept, weak mabey, but it was new for them to incorporate a concept. Perfect production. The sidelong suit, starting with Breath and ending with the Breath Reprise, I consider the songs from Breath untill the Reprise after Time a long suit, it makes the listen more interesting also. I can keep going about how this album is so much better than it is given credit for on this site.

Yes, I think it is overrated. It was my introduction to prog and the first album I owned(which is so unoriginal, everyone seems to start with DSOTM ) and for a while I thought it was the greatest piece of music ever. But later(by about a year ) I began appreciating early PF, Ummagumma became my favorite album, and I realized how overrated Dark Side really is. It doesn't have any truly great compositions, like Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Atom Heart Mother, or Echoes. All songs are simple. Most sound pretty pop and disco. There is n o t h i n g special about that album. Compared to masterpieces like Foxtrot and CTTE, it's utter crap. 3 stars it gets from me.

Agreed. Though I don't think it's a breathtaking prog album it's impossible
to not acknowledge it's importance.

Erm...yeah, a bit...I prefer the two albums that followed it. Still a great album though, I think it broke down more barriers and advanced rock music more in general. Still sounds good now, which must say alot surely??

Yes, I know. If I'm not mistaken DSOTM was the first non-addicting sleep medicine.

Although I am an American, I agree. I also agree that nothing done by a
musican is or should be overrated. Well said, Dream Orchestra.

other European prog band. |
A little anti-American??
I agree that Pink Floyd as well as many other UK bands are among the best but don't discount the North American impact on music.
If you want to bash us Americans, go right ahead - you and the rest of
the world. Maybe you could stick to the topic though.

I do agree that the album is highly overrated, but it's one of my
favorite albums. The signifigance of the album was the mostly
production, not necessaraly the songwriting. Also, I think this is one
of those albums where you can have metal, hard rock, classic rock, soft
rock, and prog rock fans and be able to listen to it without fighting
over the cd player. This album has set a standard, at least from a
production point of view. I will agree as well that this isn't the best
Floyd. Great way to introduce Floyd, though.

Thanks God DSOTM is overrated!!! I wish all other great prog-albums should be overrated too...
But the fact is the hiper-super-overrating of Madonna, Aguillera, 50 cent and all kind of crappy "music" and it's a damn!!!

For me, it's not even THEIR best album. Wish You Were Here and The Wall are both better.

Its only overated by the unintelligent mainstream sh*t heads that are the anti-prog. So what does it matter what the mainstream public thinks of an album.
Its good album either way. Not the best pink floyd album by far, but one of the best and most influencial albums in the music bussiness. |
I agree
