Anyone have favourite bass pedal moments? I'm quite fond of it booming in on Cinema Show. Incidentally, Keith Emerson never used one despite using virtually everything else Moog had to offer. Did Wakeman use one? I cant remember.
EDIT I am not talking about pedals on an organ or piano or anything else!! Edited by Snow Dog |

The opening to Xanadu (by Rush not ELO & Olivia Neutron Bomb) features it quite heavily.

Honestly,I think I am wrong about bass pedals in By-Tor and the Snow Dog. I could have sworn there was some in that. My mistake |

nice topic!
marillion: on "anorak in the UK" (2CD ed.) during "mad" (opium den-section) and "marbles live" the final note at the very end of "estonia" (goooooooooosebumps) john jowitt of IQ also makes good use of a moog taurus set. |

More or less every song of VdGG (unless Nic Potter is playing in it or Hugh Banton picks up the bass guitar himself instead of using the bass pedals of his organ).
Barbara Dennerlein, a German fusion organ-player, makes excellent use of them. Here a link to her homepage: www.barbaradennerlein.de There are some excerpts from her music on her homepage, in which you can hear her excellent foot technique. Edited by BaldFriede |

Hello. Good topic, these instruments are part of the ubiquitous Seventies symphonic rock: One of my favorite Moog Taurus Bass pedal moments: The track Actions And Reaction on Earthly Paradise from Epidaurus (Germany): halfway wonderful eruption featuring Mellotron and the Moog Taurus, goose bumps, every time! And on the CD After The Battle from Plackband (Dutch mid-Genesis inspired symphonic rock) you will hear lots of Moog Taurus bass pedal sounds, the bass player used it also on stage in the late Seventies (when I was at about 18 years old). |

'Door Opens and Closes' on Soft Machine2 opens with a brilliant Bass riff, treated with Hugh Hopper's signiture Fuzz bass.

The glide MR from Genesis uses on his pedals in Back in New York City when Gabriel sings "it was mine in the first place so I'll burn it to ash"
Of course the most famous one was the unaccompanied bass pedal solo by MR from Genesis live. |

Best solo out there! I think On Patrick Moraz's Story of I, the first track Impact, has MEGA bass pedal. I think it is anyway. |

As great as they are to hear on CD (particularly thru headphones), they are incredible to hear live. I've seen Rush over 20 times in concert and never fail to get chills when they play Xanadu. There's something special about sounds that make your pants legs flap. Speaking of headphones, I might start a new discussion on songs/bands that should be listened to thru headphones for full affect. Rush and Porcupine Tree spring to mind.

I was watching the new Rush "R30" DVD last night and I noted that Alex Lifeson plays a handful of bass pedal as well, for instance, take a look at "Subdivisions" where he plays it along with the guitar base during Geddy's keyboard theme, it's awesome! Those guys are freaking busy during the whole show, both hands and feet, as they also have huge effects gears being switched all the time!!!! RUSH RULES!!!

My fave bass pedal moment came in a Glasgow pub in the early 1980s.
My mates and I had gone along to the Dial Inn to see a band called Chasar. They were a Scottish 3-piece who did some terrific covers of Rush stuff - Freewill, Red Barchetta, By-Tor, etc. - among other things. We arrived early and got a table front and centre. As we quaffed our first couple of pints, the band started going through their sound check. Unfortunately, there was something about the sound of their Moog Taurus bass pedals that they just didn't feel was quite right - although they sounded perfectly OK to us!! For the next 20 minutes, while they made their imperceptable adjustments, we were treated to the full range of sounds and volume from the damn things. I could feel the vibration in my sternum.....the sheer power was blowing my hair back like Neil Young during a live performance of "Hurricane" in his prime......awesome!!! Oh, and just a point raised from the post from Mumakil above, from the very first time I saw Rush (Glasgow Apollo - Hemispheres tour) I was always impressed by Geddy's ability to play bass, bass pedals, AND sing all at the same time. Hell, I can't even do the "head pat, tummy rub" thing right!! |
