You think that Collins era was more innovative then Gabriel and Hackett era.

It is very reasonable to think that Genesis is "overated" (actually
that word should be destroyed), because it is praised everywhere in
progarchives. They even have 3 5 star albums and almost 4 (Nursery
Cryme 4.49). I guess the hook in Genesis is the music they play, it is
just "magical" put in short...
Amazing instrumental sections, wonderful vocalist, damn good drummer,
beautifully playing guitarist and Tony Banks... they just made music
which I think, any band did not achieve and will not achieve?...
Anyway Yes comes next because of their musical talent, but they do not
have that athmosphere Genesis did. Of course there are so many great
bands here so...
Tresspass ****½
Nursery Cryme *****
Foxtrot *****
Selling England *****
The Lamb ******
A Trick Of The Tail *****
W&W *****½

Personally I think Trespass,Selling England By The Pound,Nursery Chryme and Lamb are all a bit overrated BUT Foxtrot is every bit as good as people say! Genesis (gabriel era) were a remarkably consistent band but not very innovative IMO.On balance I actually prefer the 4 studio albums they did post Gabriel if you take Foxtrot out of the equation.

substandard tracks on all the Gabriel era albums, although they also

said that, if somebody can sit through The Battle of Epping Forest and
still call SEBTP a flawless masterpiece, they're entitled to that
opinion. It's one of the great things about this site. |
Actually, the only thing that makes SEBTP a bit less than flawless, is
I Know What I Like, and to a small degree More Fool Me. The Battle of
Epping Forest is without any doubt their most underrated track ever.

Is it too popular to give Genesis (Gabriel-era) 5 points. Do they get it because of the name or because of the music??
My point is that some may think "well well, everybody likes it so
why don't I join them and give them 5 stars myself, that'll make them
happy..."
I like Genesis myself, but in my opinion it's only "Lamb.." that beserves 5 stars.

You may disturb SOME souls, but seriously dude, this form of music is
so so far off from what is "accepted" by the majority of society that I
doubt anyone who's apart of this community would really care what
anyone would think. That's the reason why we're here. Not because
everyone else is doing it, but because we enjoy ourselves individually.
Unless you haven't noticed, this music form we call prog is a very
self-indulgent music form. People listen to it because it brings fresh
air to their existence, and it's satisfying to them.
And I don't know what country you live in, but the majority people I
know who listen to prog have their own opinions, ESPECIALLY on prog,
and even if it isn't the most developed and inept opinion, it is THEIR
OPINION..
...And to bring this all on Genesis, for shame dude. I'm not sure what
made you bring this on Genesis. Like Yes or ELP they are humble bands.
It's not like they or their devoted crowd of fans run some kind of
tyrannical cult in which they have to have only solid opinion on that
bands music.

Foxtrot enough to give a rating but i have listened to Suppers Ready
and that is an amazing song. Lamb maybe 4 stars

Well, you're completely wrong. Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, Selling England are all 5 star masterpieces.
However, The Lamb is grotesquely overrated and does not have the wonderful, magical "Genesis-atmosphere" at all. 3 stars.

Thank you for sharing your daring new theory...it's true, we're
all totally intimidated by all the 5 star reviews, so scared
sh*tless that, having no opinions of our own, we go along with
the pack, just to fit in. I'm so ashamed.
