Genesis is my favorite band, but I actually tend to agree that in the context of this website, it is slightly overrated.  This is why I haven't written reviews on their more classic albums.  Afterall, what more can be said?  I prefer writing reviews for the more neglected albums and bands.  Nevertheless, I generally agree with the rankings.  CTTE and SETB are two flawless albums from the height of the progressive rock era.

Outside the context of this website I think Genesis, particularly Gabriel/Hackett era Genesis, is severely underrated, so in a way, I'm happy that it has some place to be overrated.

     Question all you want, as long as you've something to say, but this
whole bit about overrating, underrating is a waste of time, and leads to
miles of useless threads. Music succeeds or doesn't on its own terms,
how this guy rates it or that guy underrates it is irrelevant to the music
itself...rating is for sports. Obviously by its standing in the polls, Genesis,
Yes, etc. are important to a lot of people for good reasons. What you
mean by overrated is that YOU don't like it so much, so why not say it
that way?

     To all the whiners about an overrated Genesis: If any or all of you
could ever achieve one thing in life half as creative or original as any of
the early Genesis albums, your harping might be a bit more credible. As it
is, spewing out vaccuous negative comments about some of the most
important and fruitful work of the early progressive years certainly isn't
advancing anyone toward such a goal. That something doesn't pass to
your personal taste is no reason to go on whining and sputtering about it,
especially when obviously many others find it incredibly inspiring.

Nursery Cryme... personal opinion that is the most most overrated album on this site.  A good album don't get me wrong.. but nowhere near the classic status annointed on it.  I do see where Progger is coming in some respects. In my mind the 20 minutes alone of the Tarkus suite are more 'classic' than the whole of Nursery Cryme.  Listening to Tarkus is a required lesson in Prog 101 'Introduction to Prog'.  Nursery Cryme  falls in Prog 311 - 'To Call it a classic doesn't make it a classic'  hahahhaha.

Foxtrot, IMO the first essential Genesis album, and a lesson in Prog 101.  Would have it at 3, behind CttE and Thick as a Brick... both more commercially sucessful and much more innovative than Foxtrot.

Selling England by the Pound.  My favorite Genesis album, and can see why people would put in at #1, though I think the other 4 are better albums and  greater albums within the genre.

The Lamb... never got that album.  I've tried.  It honestly bores me.

A Trick of the Tail.  Fabulous album and probably their most important album in the grand scheme of things prog. 

Ivan, while you may fault the messenger don't flame the message. There are many groups and albums I really really like... doesn't make them classics are the top albums in any given year.  Genesis did put out some fabulous albums.... but to to call damn near their entire catatlog 'classic' stretches the lines of objectivity.  IMO of course.

I think that surely we stay a little forced to get in, in the Genesis music, and some people give 5 stars just to not stay 'behind' the others, but yes Genesis is great and Nursery Crime, Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound & Wind &Wuthering are great albuns 4 1/2 for all of them.

And about The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway I think they're lost in the way, and the album isn't great how they could do. 3 for it.

foxtrot is great, but suppers ready isnt even among the best 4 songs on the album. I think Genesis were a better band in 76 and 77

It dosn't disturb me! I agree that Genesis never made a masterpiece! Each album whilst having some classic tracks are spoilt by average and mediocre filler!

Here's a surprise for you! I actually think GENESIS were the best live band [along with ELP] in the 70's but they only had Gabriel to thank for that. The others were in all honesty just his backing band IMO!

Genesis were guuys who had just left school making their first albums, while ELP, Yes members and Pink Floyd were already famous.

But check Italy and Belgium, the world doesn't start and ends in UK and USA.

In the 70's Genesis couldn't sell out a school hall whilst YES, ELP nad Floyd were packing stadiums and selling millions of albums! Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't they second on the bill to Lindisfarne as late as 1973?

I am not paranoid! The recent surge of reviews of CTTE and SEBTP prove that multi reviewing by the same people is happening to try and hustle for the number one spot.

Two Genesis albums in the top 3, One more in the top 10 and one more in the top 20, this means that 4 from the 5  Genesis Gabriel era Prog albums are in the top 20!!!!

I believe you have some kind of paranoia, there's no corruption.

Check any website rated with 5 points over 5 in the Ectagon Page  ( http://www.ectagon.com/ ) and you'll find that Genesis albums are considered nmasterpieces.

You can hate Genesis, that's your problem, but don't lie saying that only in Prog Archives Genesis is so high, because it only proves you speak without knowledge.
