If you wanted to narrow down to the top three, they would still be there!

  1. YES
  2. PINK FLOYD
  3. ELP

In the 70's those bands won just about won every music mag poll in just about every category for a period of about four years! IAnd I'm talking respected mags like 'Musical Express & Melody Maker'. Greg Lake even won best producer in 1973. Carl Palmer and Keith Emersom couldn't be touched. Their 1973 tour was the biggest grossing tour for that year [Genesis c/w PG, KC, Camel and Jethro Tull never did a stadium tour at any time in their career. Are ELP a top 5 band, a resounding YES!

The "Big Five" are not my big five. My big five are Gong, Hawkwind, Magma, Van der Graaf Generator and Amon Düül 2. Their masterpieces are:
Gong - You
Hawkwind - Warrior at the Edge of Time
Magma - Mekhanik Destruktiw Kommandöh
Van der Graaf Generator: Pawn Hearts
Amon Düül 2 - Tanz der Lemminge.

(that was a run of brilliance not matched in prog IMO)

Agreed Mickey, those six albums are all masterpieces. The reason why YES are considered to be the ultimate prog band! No other band had the same consistency as YES, no one even came close!

Genesis - Foxtrot, SEbtP

Yes - Fragile

Rush - Permanent Waves, Hemispheres

Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick, Aqualung, Minstrel In The Gallery

Pink Floyd - The Wall

Those are the "Big 5" right .  I hate the "Big" terms by the way, as in another thread ELP isn't really a "big" IMO and I'm not really into King Crimson, so they're not one of MY "bigs" and Personally I would rate either VdGG or Gentle Giant definite "Bigs" in prog. So its really a big 9:
Genesis,Yes,Rush,J-Tull,Gentle Giant,VdGG,Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and ELP. But I'm probably leaving out some "bigs"

Agree with most of the albums listed as masterpieces so far, but, are ELP really considered one of the "Big 5"?

No one has challenged that premise thus far on the thread... (I'd put RUSH, JETHRO TULL and probably even CAMEL and VdGG "ahead" of ELP in the "Big 5 or 6" but I digress.... I'm sure Karnie would disagree)

I loved King Crimson and have all the early albums of the boys and Fripp, and the solo stuff. I loved that Bruford and Holdsworth stuff. Fripp and Gabriel made a good pair; they should have had a band together . . hmm maybe not.

I hate to say this but I think you're right, so few are really flawless, if any. I like two you mentioned The Court and Lark's Tongues best; but as with most of the music I like, I play devil's advocate to actually how good it really is objectively.

Pink Floyd: like the Moody Blues, I often put on the ambient stuff late at night before I go to bed.  Dark Side is the defining epic of the 1970s.  Someone should make a movie about it like they did with that Kiss movie for the Destroyer tour or Dazed and Confused, which I guess was not about Zep. I never got to see them live because I was too young to go into Manhattan to see them in '77.  I could not get tickets when they came to the Nassau Coliseum to do The Wall.  Years later my uncle, who was one of the the arresting officers in the Son of Sam case, said to me, " Oh, you like, Pink Floyd, I was the head of security when they came to the Nassau Coliseum."  Gee, thanks.

ELP Trilogy, Brain Salad, of course. I would add Tarkus simply because it is a piece that grew and changed throughout the trios tenure and one of the prog essentials. The live version is better. Bitch's Cystal also a great piece, the jazz waltz.

Genesis.  I love Foxtrot, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, oh, and also Trick of the Tale, don't shoot me, there must be some Misunderstanding. but for the life of me cannot see the why Selling England is number two or Nursery Crime is a top ten prog essential.

Yes, as I just said elsewhere. Not to be underrated because of the popularity they acheived. They were great.  I've seen them six times, never with the same line up. I'm sure most Yes fasn think, six times big dea.  Those three classic albums defined the genre.

Jethro Tull, bigger than many but always forgotten.  You'll see whose remembered in one hundred years.

Not to put the creator down, but these threads are so predictable!

But, I'll add one bit.

King Crimson:

Larks' Tongue in Aspic
Starless and Bible Black (probably)
