What type of sound do you like?

If you like a harder not very progressive sound:

  • Rush
  • Fly By Night
  • Caress of Steel (this album though is very progressive)
  • Counterparts
  • Test For Echo
  • Vapor Trails
  • Feedback (a cover album, but no less a rush album)

If you like a progressive sound:

  • Caress of Steel
  • 2112
  • A Farewell to Kings
  • Hemispheres
  • Permanent Waves
  • Moving Pictures

If you like an 80's synth sound:

  • Signals
  • Grace Under Pressure
  • Power Windows
  • Hold Your Fire
  • Presto
  • Roll the Bones

  1. A Farewell To Kings (1977)
  2. Hemispheres (1978)
  3. Permanent Waves (1980)
  4. Moving Pictures (1981)
  5. 2112 (1976)
  6. Caress Of Steel (1975)
  7. Fly By Night (1975)
  8. Signals (1982)
  9. Grace Under Pressure (1984)
  10. Power Windows (1985)

That's my top 10!!!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: "Exit Stage Left" (Live 1981), "Different Stages" (Live 1998) and their last dvd "R30 - 30th Anniversary World Tour".

Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves, and Hemispheres are the most flawless.  Start with one of those and then you'll probably want to try some more.

I believe my most common response is to start with 2112 or Moving Pictures.
Anything from 1976-1981 would probably be a good starter.
As Cygnus X-2 stated, it depends on what kind of sounds you're into.

I would start with 2112.

But glittering prizes
And endless Compromises
Shatter the illusion
Of integrity

Like many bands with a long career, Rush's sound has gone through a number of transitional phases. While I don't enjoy all the phases of Genesis and yes, I do enjoy Rush's entire catalogue. Suppose it depends what kind of sound you like. My suggestion would be start at the beginning and work your way forward chronologically. I would give the same advice to people wanting to check out Tull.

I'd go with either Moving Pictures or 2112, both of which are really great.

Hi

Bit of a newbie to prog, although I do have all of Rush's studio albums

My favourite is Permanent Waves, but it's probably their most progressive (except for Hemisphers perhaps), so I wouldn't recommend it as a starter.  I'd start with Moving Pictures - Tom Sawyer will get you addicted immediately! Just try air-drumming along to Peart...

2112 is also a good one to start with although a few of the songs on the second side are a little weaker than the suite bit.

If you're into synthy stuff,  Grace Under Pressure is actually a very underrated album, although Signals is probably stronger song for song.

I would start with 2112. Then if you like the hard rock parts I would continue with Fly by Night; if you prefer the prog parts then i would try Hemispheres or Moving Pictures.

I would reccomend starting with the Chronicles CD set, it gives a nice sampling of all their stuff up until Presto and would allow you to decide what stage of their carreer you like the most.

Another option is the Different Stages Live CD- also a good sampling of everything and it showcases rush's strongpoint-live performance.

If you want a studio album i recomend 2112 if you are a seasoned prog listener, if you are just getting into prog i strongly reccomend COUNTERPARTS i consider that CD to be one of the most underrated cd's ever.

on the side...i cant wait for rush's new CD...im hearing that completeion is expected late this summer or early fall!!

I heard Moving Pictures back in 1981 and I was instantly hooked.  However, I would have loved to be exposed to Rush's music chronologically.  I suggest listening to the albums in the order they were released.

I also started with Moving Pictures, then with Hempisheres actually. Then 2112 and so on...
And air drumming (or drumming) to Tom Sawyer is very entertaining actually. I always want to play it with my drums everytime I hear it!
This is an electrified fairytale
