Wanted to find out what everybody thinks of the English rock band The Darkness. IMO Justin Hawkins would be a prog BEAST if he ever decided to switch over from popular. What did you think of their first album? Second album? The band as a whole? |

I like them. One of the best hard rock bands of the last ten years. The singer has an amazing range and great personality. Their music is not very original (it's like a mix of Queen, Aerosmith and Van Halen) but they can write good songs. I prefer the first album, but the second is good as well, with more influence by Queen. As they say in their interviews, they have got to reintroduce guitar solos in radio stations.

It's funny, I sometimes happen to catch one of their videos on MTV, and listening to their songs really makes me appreciate 80's hard rock in a new way, even though I rarely listen to that kind of music anymore; you know, Bon Jovi, Scorpions, even the 80's version of Queen (I really fail to see how their classic 70's era could even be considered as a comparison here...!) The music of these bands was overblown in many ways and it had its weaknesses, yes, but at least they had the kind of song writing skills that the guys (the Hawkins brothers?) in The Darkness can only dream about. A guitar solo won't save things if the song in general is pure gibberish and devoid of great melodic hooks (just take a listen to that terrible chorus in One Way Ticket to Hell I personally don't understand why people get so excited about this band. It seems that the fact that they have come out in recent years is reason enough to get into the music, even though many admit that they are no match to the rock music of past decades. Why not just keep enjoying the real thing, then, even though the music is older than what The Darkness are producing? Because surely their music, although having been produced in this millennium, doesn't sound any fresher...! So yeah, count me out |

The Hawkins brothers used to play for a progressive metal band the name i forgot. They decided to move to "mainstream" coz no one really listened to them back then. EDIT: Ok heres a bit of a history: Hailing from the coastal town of Lowestoft, the most easterly town in the United Kingdom, Justin Hawkins and his lead guitarist and brother Dan found themselves in London, where they met bassist Frankie Poullain. Inspired by an interest in classic prog-rock, the trio decided to form a band, dubbed Empire. Things didn't go quite as planned and the band soon split, with Poullain journeying to Venezuela in search of adventure. The Hawkins knew what they wanted in their next band: an increased focus on volume and showmanship. A Millennium Eve karaoke competition was the turning point. Justin's spectacular performance of "Bohemian Rhapsody" lit the light bulb over his brother's head. "I know," Dan exclaimed, "YOU be the frontman!" Edited by Majestic_Mayhem |

The first time I heard "I Believe In a Thing Called Love", I literally laughed my ass off. I'm serious. My ass came right off of my body and I had to reattach it with superglue. That said, when they reconstituted Queen, they should have hired Justin Hawkins instead of Paul Rodgers. He at least has the look down pat.

They're just a bit of fun and nothing more. They've already killed their career so no one need worry about them any more. At some point they'll crave being taken seriously and no one will, the album won't sell and they'll take the slippery slope into obscurity, I Believe in a Thing Called Love will appear on countless rock compilations and the Christmas one on the Christmas compilations.

I saw one video and while I didn't like their attitude, the music really made sense - very cleverly done. But I wouldn't buy any of their albums, and of course I would prefer Queen without any hesitation. |
