For me it's the Big 8.
Yes
King Crimson
Gentle Giant
ELP
Jethro Tull
Pink Floyd
Camel
Genesis
Each had a unigue sound and identity that all other prog bands in later years are referenced against.

Where's Kansas in all this? Sales wise they out sold VDGG, Camel and GG combined. And throw in Genesis who are now enjoying a revival, during their hey day you rarely heard of them. Sorry but true!

I thought there were "THE SEVEN GRAND":(in no order whatsoever)Yes,Rush,Pink Floyd,King Crimson,Genesis,ELP and Jethro Tull. Honorary mentions probably Gentle Giant, Marillion, Van der Graaf and Camel(I repeat: I dunno).
And what the hell??Rush are not considered prog by themselves?! Why?! Anyway, who cares, their music still shines. ![](smileys/smiley17.gif)

Well if the big 5 are the five most popular in general then probably: Pink Floyd Genesis Yes Rush King Crimson
But if we're talking my big 5 then: Tool King Crimson Yes Meshuggah Pink Floyd

I want to make clear that sales is not a criterion at all. Most of Genesys sales were in the post Gabriel / Hackett era which allmost all of us agree that musically it is much less interesting. Kansas sold great but most of you did not even concider them for an honorable mention.
Months ago I had an argue with Ivan about the importance of Renaissance and he said that PF, KC, Yes, Genesys & ELP concidered as the great prog bands. In more than one way it make sense since each of these bands made music never heared before and influenced so many others.
I would add Jethro Tull, VDGG and Robert Wyatt to the other 5 and claim these are the "first line" artists in prog (neglecting non english artists since prog did start in England and my knowledge of other prog countries is quite minor).
At the second line I would count Renaissance, Moody blues, Kansas, GG, Camel, Vangelis and few more but that is more my taste and not based on objective criteria.

The biggest bands as far as influence goes in progressive rock would be the bands that sold the most records and had or have a wide ranging reperatore with musical virtuosity.
1. YES
2. Genesis
3. Frank Zappa and the Mothers
4. Pink Floyd
5. King Crimson

It would be unfair not to incude Henry Cow, Magma, Comus, Anglagard, Can VDGG,etc, but the big 5 is only about popularity
