I think we can declare ol' Neil the winner of this one. The professor is running away and leaving Portnoy in the dust.

Peart.  End of Deabate.  He can still an amazing drum in his mid-50s, just watch "Der Trommler" on R30.

Interesting how the debate in this thread seems to be split 50/50 ( I vote Portnoy BTW) but Peart Is running off with the poll.

Becuase alot of people choose to keep quiet.  I could make a long winded argumentative post, but I know that perat is more technical and overall a "better" drummer.  I dont care what other people say.

A CV is very important in any profession! It shows that Peart wasn't capable of adapting to any other technique other than rock music IMO. He has never done any session work or been invited to guest  by any other artist that I know of. Look at all the great drummers CV's for a comparisons to Pearts, which is blank!
CV in case of N. Peart is simply Rush. That's great CV.OK, N. Peart has been playing only in Rush, Portnoy has been playing in hundreds bands, music projects.Maybe Peart doesn't want to play outside of Rush? It would be unwise to think other bands, other musicians don't want to cooperate with Peart

Not true.

Peart masterminded (ie produced, played on and organised) the two "Burning For Buddy" Cds which featured a host of top drummers.

He plays on two tracks on Jeff Berlin & Vox Humana's Champion album from 1985.

Neil appears on the Buddy Rich Memorial Scholarship Concert, Vol. Three & Four, 1991

He also appears on The Rheostatics' Whale Music, from 1992

and in 2006 Neil is to perform on Vertical Horizon's Next Album

He claims to get most of his musical fulfillment from Rush and dont forget that between 1997 and 2002 he was just getting his life back together. He fills most of his spare non-Rush time travelling and writing books and has his latest one out next week.

I don't know anything about his 'outside of Rush' life. I admit. Thx for these infosbtw --> I'm right. Peart is better than Portnoy

With all due respect,if you weren't in possesion of the facts then why make that post?

A lot of young drummers - after they had been watching Neil Peart's performances in various situations - resigned as music drummers --> Peart was fantastic player.

Hmmm... if a musician makes me want to stop playing, then that can't mean he's really all that good, can itWink?

Just joking. I like Peart more. Wicked drummer.

But still... there's plenty of drummers better than both of them.

There are many errors in PA music service, for instance length of songs, classification of bands (prog metal!!!!)...

I think - in that situation - my error is insignificant.

I agree Matti, not everyone is as omniscient as you, Tony R and I think that MattiR had every right to post this thread bona fide, even with the limited information he possessed.

I think the aim of every discussion on this forum is also to gain new information about favorite artists from other progfans. I think that we have all liberty to post completely false thesis, which eventually would be expelled by other participants, thus learning something.
yet you still have time!

Neil Peart hasn't proven his skills lately, but I still think he's better than Portnoy, he just has to show it.

don't hurt yourself hahahaha.... and as far as feeling well.....  hahahhaha....  I'm feeling great boss....

hahahhahahaha .....    I may have given up on DT but can always count on getting a rise out of Tony's elite fighting force ...  though  I didn't say he was a bad lyricist.... just not a great one... even if he's won awards in Canada for his books  (wasn't his competition one year a book of poetry by  Bob and Doug McKenzie LOL)

Ok, I dont really like Portnoy's drumming on Selling England By The Pound,it sounds too much like Phil Collins. The three albums he recorded with Magama contained some very poor technical performances too....
