I'd say Belew, at least for post-1980 KC. Wetton and Bruford would come immediately afterwards.

I'm a little surprised that Bruford is winning...

Where's the Peter Sinfield love?
After Fripp and Sinfield, Belew is the third most important member of the band.

At this point, Belew has become just has important to the band as Fripp. He plays most of the solos, writes all the lyrics, helps write most of the music. Without Belew, there wouldn't be a KC. However, I can see some form of the band continuing without Fripp (though they may call themselves something else simply out of respect).

Either Bruford or Belew... I'm leaning towards Adrian more because he's been a lasting influence on Fripp for the past 25 years and has been integral in the creation of modern King Crimson music.

strange that the real most important member (depending on the period, of course...) gets too litle mentions... IMHO without Sinfield there wouldn't be KC at all.
as for other periods, as much as I love Wetton's singing and bass playing, I don't think he should be as important as Bruford. Besides, he's the longest lasting member other than Fripp... wish he was still there (Mastelotto fills in his shoes very effectively, though...)
I'd go for Sinfield, 'cause his period was when KC was "the real" KC...

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret: Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)

I'd second that.
But let's face it since 80, Belew is the most important KC member (although hardly my fave)
Bruford is also a good runner-up.

And my vote goes to Jamie Muir. Although he was only in the band for a few months, both Fripp and Bruford have acknowledged the enormous influence he had on not just their playing but their whole appraoch to music, and it was after he joined that KC became a truly great improvising band. Without him post 1973 KC would have been a very different beast, if it had existed at all.
Otherwise Bruford or Belew, although I'm more inclined to pick Bruford because of his crucial role in the 73 - 75 line up, the 80s incarnation and the double trio. Listen to The Night Watch, Absent Lovers and Vroom Vroom for proof. Belew has obviously been essential to all KC line ups since the 80s, and has been Fripp's best musical sparring partner, but he's only been in 2 classic line ups as opposed to Bruford's presence in 3. Much as I like recent KC, especially TPTB, they've yet to equal the achievements of previous incarnations.

I vote for Belew. Apparently Fripp might think so too, he's the only KC member to have been around for so damn long!!! Love his work on TPTB and Thrak. His voice sometimes remind me of John Lennon.

Have you heard the version of Free As A Bird on Vroom Vroom? The resemblance is uncanny.

No I did not. I'll try to hear it though !
So I am not the only one who thinks there is a resemblance then ?

No, you aren't. If I'm not mistaken, in one of the inner booklets to either Discipline or Beat or Three of a Perfect Pair there's an article saying he's got a Lennon-esque manner of singing, spmething like that.

I agree with both of you. Hence why I voted for Sinfield and if I could voted for a second place I would've voted for Belew. Both had a mayor impact in their sound, lyrics and writting department.

Hmmm.... without Sinfield (who came up with the band's name), they would've been called....
Giles, Lake, Fripp & McDonald?
And that would've been the end of it......

bruford
belew is great, and i like his playing on later KC albums, but honestly, they gotta get a new singer. it was smart of Belew not to sing much on TPTB, since he may realize his vocals are not what the band needs. i still say Jon Anderson was the best vocalist KC had (even though he was a guest and not cause im a YES-fanboy, which im not)
