What do you think? Which band was the most influential in the creation of heavy metal? Obviously Black Sabbath was pretty much "guilty" for that but other ideas and influences came from elsewhere. Any thoughts?

Blue Cheer. They showed that it was ok to play loud and heavy in pop music.

Didn't Led Zep start with the heavy stuff first?

Black Sabbath were the first ... but Motörhead were very important for the development of modern metal!

Blue Cheer - 1968 with Vincebus Eruptum
Mc5 - february 1969 with Kick out the Jams, weren't they playing metal/hardrock very early?

IMHo, Rush are the forefathers of progressive metal. You're right, I should've put them there.

I think you have a point here - even though DP are considered less influential on Metal than Led Zep or Black Sabbath, I think their influence cannot be so easily discounted. After all, a song like "Highway Star" has been often defined as the archetypal speed metal track - as shown by its cover by Metal Church on their self-titled debut album of 1984.

I have access to some albums by these artists - but could you point me towards some key songs which you think were "metal"?

Listen to Deep Purple "In Rock", Especially "Flight of the Rat" , "Hard Loving Man" and even "Speed King". Look at the year this album was released then tell me that any one of those bands did metal first.

Well as one who lived through the release of the seminal albums and got to hear them whilst they were "fresh" in the very early 70s I have to say that Zep,Purple and Sabbath were considered the seminal Heavy Metal bands in the UK. We were aware of Blue Cheer and MC5,but for us,parochially, these UK bands were the Heavy Metal scene... what some people seem to be saying about Metal equates to declaring that Michelin invented the wheel.....

I'm a relatively young person (I was born in 1975). To me what these artists did in the early 70s never sounded like "metal" to me, as I was listening to more modern metal bands in my youth - like the Scorpions (post 78), Accept, 80s Judas Priest & Iron Maiden etc.. These bands have a much more heavy sound, and more importantly: The riffing and songwriting is much different. But: at the same time I was also listening to Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple *a lot*, and I really like them. I understand how people can call Deep Purple "metal" (especially In Rock and Machine Head), but to me "Heavy Rock" seems to be the better label.

Mike : for MC5, try the song Kick out the Jams. Although the spirit is in space/Psych rock, that particular song is clearly rock/metal.
Blue Cheer was also labelled power blues, just the whole Vincebus album will suffice .
Maybe even mention Sir Lord Baltimore?
TonyR. For you in England yes, but you can not forget the American bands started in 1968!!
This kind of subject is talked about before, and the early Kinks songs even were mentioned!!
