60's Psychedelia

A good thing to get would be the Nuggets compilation. Two of my favorite bands from that are 13th Floor Elevators and Count Five.

Oh thank you, thank you!  Any specific albums I should go for from those bands?

Cool, thanks for the suggestions.

I have everything by the Zombies... gotta find that collection, though.  Also have everything by Floyd and most everything by 13th Floor Elevators... also have nearly every Zappa disc and Trout Mask, etc.  Lol.

Yeah not may people do...Boingo sold four copies, Elfman bought one, I bought one, Elfman's mom bought one and right now there is one on eBay going for $5,000,000.

Beware the full Nuggets box set has more pre-psychedelia garage than psychedelia, so go for The Nuggets compilation:

However, this set appears to have an American bias. Two triple sets issued in 1992 in the UK give a broader overview - if you can find them:
The Psychedelic Years 1966-69 (Sequel NXT CD 221)
The Psychedelic Years Revisited 1966-69 (Sequel NXT CD 222)
It looks like these recordings were licensed from Knight Records (in the US???) who issued them in 1990.

There were three Nuggets box sets. The first was the American garage/psych acts, the second was the British psych acts (despite it claiming it was 'virtually hitless', bands like Them, The Pretty Things, The Small Faces and The Yardbirds were featured...) and the third was 80s psychedelia (I bet that one sold a fair bit less...). There was also a box set released by Mojo of UK psych, with a title that escapes me. But if you're on a budget, these are ruled out.

To be honest, though I love one track by most of the American garage/psych bands, I don't think too many of those 'Nuggets' acts had much more than one song to offer, and endlessly rehashed it over their albums and even most of those relied rather heavily on The Yardbirds and the early Rolling Stones tracks.

That list was published in a later issue of Mojo again around 1997 or so, I think- I have that issue and I'm certain that list is in there. The British one tends to be quite predictable in some cases, imo- there are lots of singles that are much more heavily revered amongst psych enthusiasts than say, the ersatz 'Pictures Of Matchstick Men', despite their obscurity. I heavily recommend the slightly dubious compilation 'The Perfumed Garden' (the title taken from John Peel's show) which is pretty much a precis of wonderful, hugely obscure 60s psych pop from the UK. If you're into Syd era Floyd, I recommend Kaleidoscope's 'Tangerine Dream', and if you're into 'Oddysey and Oracle' by The Zombies (a personal favourite of mine) check out the originally massively rare Billy Nicholls album 'Would You Believe' now available on a Sanctuary, deluxe 2cd set. Kind of like a Swinging London counterpart to 'Pet Sounds', IMO.

However, that American Mojo list I find hard to find fault with, really. Partly because I find a lot of the more garage/psych acts did like one good track IMO, as I said.

Sal,you're right about the republishing of Savage's  list of psychedelia but alas not in a illustrated booklet as the original version was. BTW Jon Savage wrote the readable, definite history of the British punk movement England's Dreaming.
The earliest British psychedelia compilations in my collection are on vinyl, released in 1986 by See For Miles Records: The British Psychedelic Trip 1966-1969 and The British Psychedelic Trip 1966-1969 Volume 2 , which have a few of obvious tracks (e.g. Kites, My White Bicycle), and lots of less common examples of the genre (e.g. Davey Jones aka Davie Bowie, July, Lemon Tree, Turquoise, The Attack, 23rd Turnoff, Virgin Sleep, The Fire, The Accent). Did these two LPs ever make it on to CD?
