The Pretty Things are definetely essential. S.F Sorrow is often reduced to a mere footnote in rock history as being the first rock opera before Tommy, but it's really a masterpiece on it's own. It's psychedelic, folky and rocky, accessible, and still experimental. The songwriting is amazing and indian instruments are used often as well. I love it, but Parachute, the follow up, is even better. It's not as psychedelic, more rock'n'roll oriented but it's definetely one of the greatest rock albums of the 60's.

In terms of precedence SF Sorrow maybe argued as the second rock opera. Mark Wirtz & Keith West's Teenage Opera was started in 1966, with a couple of single releases (e.g. Excerpts From A Teenage Opera, aka Grocer Jack* - a UK No. 1 - and Sam). However, because of the EMI record label growing cold on an initially successful project, recording became elongated through 1967 but not completed until 1968. Even then we had to wait 20+ years for a full release on album. SF Sorrow, however, is much superior.

Psychedelic folk/Acid folk/Cosmic folk. These are labels often used on Incredible String Band; Tyrannosaurus Rex and even bands like Pentangle and Curved Air.
Here's some of the best 60's releases I've heard in that genre: Chimera - Chimera - 1969 UK Lost masterpiece of late 60s acid folk/baroque psychedelia, the unreleased 1969 album by Chimera – featuring future Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Weston – was partly produced by Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason who, like Rick Wright, makes a cameo appearance. (Doesn't say who wrote this) Extradition - Hush - 1971 (I know) Australia Extradition, literally "ex-tradition", reacted against the folk purists to show the 'true folk spirit', and, equal to its intention, also succeeded in becoming a trademark with a legendary status, to show subtle inspiration and an honest direction of what was inspired from the heart. Partly it was stimulated by the music from people like Shirley Collins, Annie Briggs and Sandy Denny, and groups like Incredible String Band, Pentangle and Fairport Convention. Another drive was the group's free experiment with some odd and exotic instruments, like the Indian vina, a sitar with pedal, organ, harmonium and chimes, and with Asian rhythms. (psychedelicfolk.homestead.com) Ok. Heres two more 70's releases that are too good to leave out: Phantasia: Phantasia 1971-72 US Reissue of US psychedelic ultra rarity recorded 1971/72. The original albums (a complete one and a one-sided) are legends for all psychedelic/garage collectors, only 25 copies pressed of each -- not many people have the pleasure of having seen a copy. The music is creeping slowly and sensitively in your mind, whether stoned or not ö it takes you wherever you want. Those are the complete sessions, 55mins in mastertape quality presented the first time to the public -- extremely informative booklet (20 sided), with outstanding artwork and colour photos. One of the best Psychedelic albums, playing in the same league as Fraction, Music Emporium, Hunger, Mystic Siva, Damon. Later the band changed into Trizo 50 that will also be released on WIS. For us unbelievable that this extremely talented band didn't make it. (forcedexposure.com) Can Am Des Puig: The Book of Am 1970-78 UK Double album and a beautiful 144 pages book. Gong related gem. Read (and listen) all about it in my link to psychedelicfolk.homestead.com. Can Can Am Des PuigCjj Am Des PuigCan Am Des Pu |

The United States of America album is pretty incredible and pretty much essential. Tons of stellar electronics, great vocals, and overall a vital album to any psychedelic collection. Not perfect, but definetely an interesting and fun album that is an excellent addition to your collection.

Cream are a great band but they aren't very 'psychedelic'. I think of them as more of a hard rock band, more like Zeppelin. Still groundbreaking stuff though.

I'm definetely going to second United States of America, what an amazing album, and express my indignation that as far as I can tell noone has mentioned Love - Forever Changes. What gives? That's quite a magnificent album as well.

Wonderful album. Da Capo from '66 is equally great, and really more psychedelic. Twink: Think Pink '70 This must be the ultimate fuzzed and stoned psychedelia album ever. The Tea Company: Come and Have Some Tea with the Tea Company '68 This is a great forgotten psychedelia gem. Never reissued. All info I could find was this lukewarm review. But instead of reading about it, you can get it here. Omnibus: omnibus '70 This is also brilliant. Beauregard Ajax: Dear Priscilla '67 |

Children of One: Children of One. Brilliant album from USA '69, Its something like a trippy avant-psych. Easier to get into than Third Ear Band, but no guitars and it doesn't rock.

Here's two you can start off with Christine 23 Onna Acid Eater Braen's Machine Underground (Edit: the image fell out) Exploito psych monster rarity. Recorded by Piero Umiliani at the now legendary SOUND-WORK-SHOP studio in January 1971. Release in a very limited (less than 100) library only release on Umiliani's LIUTO label. The original vinyl is practicaly impossible to find, as far as i know there is no reissue. Acid Drenched Fuzz guitar with one funky rhythm section. The drum sound its pretty interesting. The style is not far from other ghost-groups of the same period, instrumental music that could be used as a film soundtrack, with fuzz guitar and keyboards to the fore, and probably more psych-oriented than others. It's certain that behind the name Braen's Machine hid Umiliani himself and Alessandro Alessandroni, as they appeared with their nicknames Braen and Gisteri as the album tracks composers.
