I haven't heard many from that list. And I can't decide right now.
Umm, I'll say Jaco Pastorius for what he did with Weather Report. Amazing stuff! ![]() |

I love the singing bass of Eberhard Weber, therefore my vote went to him. I miss Glen Moore on the list

When you have to choose between the likes of Bona and Wooten from a list you know you have a tough choice but when talking jazz bass it has to be Jaco Pastorius.

Probably due to his cheesy career in American Idol, people never mention one of the greatest, Randy "The Emperor" Jackson, the guy played with almost everybody doing an outstanding job with:
Then started with Madonna and N'Sync going for a more profitable career, but during his peak, he was amazing. Iván

I voted Dave Holland, though I've never actually seen him play (of those I have, it would probably be Eberhard Weber).
A couple of names not included that would be worth consideration:
Scott La Faro: died very young, did some incredible work with (pianist) Bill Evans.
Richard Davis: very versatile, outstanding jazz bassist who has also worked extensively in the classical field (allegedly he was Stravinsky's favourite bassist). And he played on Astral Weeks...

Richard Bona, because apart from his skills as a bassist he is also a good vocalist, and his solo career shows a wide diversity of influences.

And pipped Jaco in a couple of jazz polls (Downbeat!) in the late 70's for jazz bass guitarists . |

I like how (on his solo records) Stanley Clarke plays like he's having fun. He's also an amazing songwriter.

MoS With apologies from trampling over your excellent - thought-provoking in my case - polls on other instruments, I can't hold back further. BTW buried somewhere in PA, triggered by a much shorter poll of bass guitarists, I rattled off a list of jazz bass guitarists that rock bass guitarists should check out. So while knowing these polls are harmless fun, the teacher in me needs to make these things more comprehensive and possible sources of information. Personally I see real omission in the absences of Jack Bruce (for instance, you should read how influential Bruce was to Steve Swallow's conversion to bass guitar playing - the two do get to play together on at least one Kip Hanrahan album) and Jonas Hellborg , who through his recordings on the DEM and Bardo labels over the the last 20 years, has demonstrated a virtuosity in a number of music forms, most jazz and jazz rock but indo-jazz fusion and even thrash metal - sticking to the 4 string electric or acoustic bass guitars). Remember John McLaughlin discovered Hellborg after what are reported disappointing workouts with a mentally degenerating Jaco (btw we are promised the complete Trio Of Doom recordings on a single CD sometime this year), and the live recordings (alas that only circulate as bootlegs) are stunning. I agree, his bass work with Journey was amazing. Most people just tend to look at his producing work with lame pop acts however.

I have a hard time choosing between Victor Wooten and Jaco Pastorius. Victor is more technically skilled, but I'll give it to Jaco becasue he can show off within the confines of a song without every display being an unaccompanied solo, IMO the main flaw in Wooten's playing. |

if we are talking about more than just jazz, Helmut Hattler of Kraan, Guru Guru and Tab Two (and many short lived projects like Highdelberg and Liliental) should definitely be on the list
