Collin's is just OK, nothing spectacular and Peart's time keeping can be a bit suspect.

Mr Peart. Cant wait to see him live with rush again.
I'm also gonna shout out for Phil Collins. Hes really a great drummer and doest get the credit he deserves. |

Bill Bruford is #1. I must agree that Gavin Harrison should be on the list. He is amazing! One of the best out there IMHO

Bill Bruford or Billy Cobham, can't decide which.
Portnoy is a good drummer, no question - but it's all too much with too many fills, to the point of being intrusive and distracting,
Ed Warby of Ayreon & Star One (though I prefer what he does with Gorefest
 )An up-coming young drummer who was really impressive at this years ProgPower was Tor Atle Andersen of Norwegian Prog Metallers Communic.

Gavin! When I saw Porc Tree (AKA Tofu Bush) In Montreal last weekend, he was absolutely flawless, and I was glad to see that he didn't rely solely on the twin pedal.
Also, Bruford is outstanding, extremely skilled, I would say the two are tied...it's very tough to chose just one. And a few others I like: -Gene Krupa -Buddy Rich -Jojo Mayer Being a drummer, this list could be much longer. |

Collins is not getting enough credit here. In my opinion he is absolutely fantastic, one of the best ever. Peart is still my favorite though...

Having seen just about every prog drummer in concert you care to mention, I would say Carl Palmer, Bill Bruford & Mike Portnoy.
I've never been impressed with Peart, just his overloaded drum kit looks impressive!

1) Gavin Harrison. Mix Bruford, Peart and Steve Gadd together, then add even more taste and technique. The new benchmark.
2) Neil Peart. Neil made drums cool for non-drummers. He's the godfather. 3) Danny Carey. A unique voice, paving his own path with the technique to back it up. 4) Bill Bruford. No one pwns a snare like Bill. 5) Steve Gadd. The ultimate play anything anytime anywhere drummer. No limitations. |

Being a drummer and knowing what it takes to play this stuff, I am in awe of just about all of the names mentioned here. Neil Peart is almost impossible to copy, not so much because of his speed but the tighness with which he plays. Gavin Harrison is so creative I watch the latest PT video just to see what he is actually doing. Yes is my favorite band and I love both White and Bruford for very different reasons. Palmer is the second fastest drummer I have ever heard (Buddy Rich being #1) but I don't find him to be particularly interesting. The drummer I find to be my favorite (notice I didn't say the best) is Phil Collins. I know he is not as fast as some of the ones previously mentioned, but it seems he has an unbelieveable ability to play exactly what the music needs to make it more interesting. His drumming on Cinema Show is unbelieveable. Can I play it-yes.....Could I have created it-no way.

Bruford. He is the definition of less is more, but that less... in two beats he has surpassed what most drummers do in a whole album, what a swing, what a creative playing
Second for me is Daney Carey, which I consider, after Bruford, to be the most original drummer, in the way that I can recognize him very, very easily |
