Topic: Long Pieces with Frith and Cutler Posted: June 03 2007 at 09:16 |
I'm a fan of the early work of these RIO giants, in various configurations. To remind everyone that they could get very prog-rocky indeed, I've picked four startlingly good songs involving the pair of 'em, which not coincidentally are all quite long (nine minutes is a staggering amount of time for an Art Bears song) and go through a variety of stages and styles. To the fans - which is your favourite piece? Don't forget to tell the rest of us why; I made this poll partially to let the neophytes know that there's warmth to be found in their music. =)
My favourite is Living in the Heart of the Beast, from Henry Cow's "In Praise of Learning" because of the brilliant way that repetition is not relied upon (until the end where it coalesces into a bizarre march!), and masked in many instances. Also, the chilling, polemic voice of Dagmar Krause hardly relents for a whole quarter of an hour and she's one of my favourite singers.

Oh man, this is a tough one. I love all of these pieces. I'm gonna go with Aksak Maboul's Cinema here. It's just such a beautiful piece, and Aksak Maboul was such a great band. Plus, they don't get enough credit, so I try to shamlessly promote them whenever I can.
Oh, and another favorite is the 20+ minute Beautiful as the Moon, Terrible as an Army With Banners medly from Concerts. It truly is beautiful as the moon.

I still haven't heard Art Bears (shame on me!), but of the other three my favourite is Aksak Maboul's Cinema. Magnificent song! I'm not very good at explaining why I like certain things though.
