Special mention for Ric Fierabracci, who played with Corea's Elektric Band, Frank Gambale, Dave Weckl... Shakira too, so they say, but that's of no importance. The way he improvises with sequences, arpeggios... it's enough for me. And only one vote for Carter? one of the most versatile there is, and just look at his historial.. one of the most solicited session jazz bassists in history |

I voted for Eddie Gomez, though there were many in the list who I don't know. He has been playing in many awesome records, and I'm really fond of his bow work on Ralph Towner's "Batik". Dave Holland has done some cool stuff too.

After the new kid on the block in the form of Hadrien Feraud (great first solo album, just out), we now have an 18 year old bass wunderkind in an Aussie 18 year old lady, Tal Wilkenfeld:
Like a lot of great Aussie musicians currently based in LA!

Great list, very difficult to choose.
Besides Percy Jones and some others mentioned, another name that should be on the list is Tetsuo Sakurai.
Anyone else familiar with him?
I was just recently introduced to this guy from the Gentle Hearts Tour material in which he played with Dennis Chambers and (the vastly under-appreciated) Greg Howe.

I accept my ignorance, but there's a few names on that list that I do not recognize at all.
As for my favorite jazz bassist, it has to be Pekka Pohjola. Some may consider this favoritism, Pohjola hailing from my homecountry and all, but for me there's no other one. He's fast, melodic, and uses patterns that are rarely heard. Check out the solo here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3a-E5TF1JlI |

Dick has made mention of great Aussie musicians in NY. Forgive me for giving a plug to my bro. in law who, as a great Aussie musician , would love to be in NY, but he has other commitments, namely, family.
If interested, check out his web site: www.craignewman.com His discography is broad [he has to make a living too you know] but there is some nice jazz stuff in it with some interesting projects pending including with fellow Aussie keyboard maestro Phil Turcio, Will Kennedy [ex Yellowjackets] and Gary Meek [Dave Weckl Band]. Samples I've heard have heavy Weather Report influences. Check out the samples on Penny Dyers CDs . It's his wife and therein lies the connection he says with an element of pride!! |

I would suggest the role of this type of thread is point you to other musicians, who you won't be familiar with but may come to like. Thanks for the You Tube link! Edited by Dick Heath - December 10 2007 at 05:39 |

I was thinking more the Oz LA community in California. Virgil Donati (currently with Planet X, but also played with Scott Henderson), T.J. Helmerich and Brett Garsed (of Uncle Moes Space Ranch), Frank Gambale are the ones that immedately come to mind in the jazz rock fraternity. It is worth noting only Chad Wackerman has reciprocated in the last 5 years, spending a ~ year in Oz.
In case this has been any misreading of the country , also one very excellent Austrian guitarist living/working in LA: Alex Machacek, while I believe Joe Zawinul owns a house there.

Yes, my geography is way off the mark. I read LA but registered NY! A few thousand kilometres is nothing to us downunder. I have to fly or drive 1700 k to see and hear anything special in Brisbane. It's more like well over 2500 to see something in Sydney. Next up is 'Steely Dan' in Brisbane in Sept. Looking forward to that one.
Virgil and Brett, in particular, are well known to us from our Melbourne connections mentioned in my previous post. Thanks Dick, I think I have my countries squared away......just |

Just received a promo of the forthcoming (?)Marcus Miller album, Free - stripped down jazz funk from the master and some great alto sax from David Sanborn, sounding dirtier than I've heard in a long while
