Topic: a scary consideration today about Black S Posted: July 24 2007 at 08:32 |
I think Black Sabbath could be proto prog now don`t panic its probably just my lack of carrots in this months diet causing me to think strange things again , but I was listening to them and I`m sure I hear some early prog metal ideas anyway I just wanted to share my insanity with you and see what you think ? personally I think Sabbath could deserve to be here as a proto entry

Yes, albums such as Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Volume 4, Sabatoge, and Technical Ecstasy could be considered prog related in the least. Good point!!!!!

Black Sabbath are way more prog than a lot of bands on here IMO. They are responsible the whole Doom Metal movement and some of the metal bands on here are obviously heavily influenced by them.
However I think we need to sort out all the bands that have been added that everyone is complaining about before adding any more bands that are on the borders of Prog.

BLOOS SWEAT & TEARS and THE WHO are on progarchives now; so why not BLACK SABBATH!
I think one day Progarchives will become Rockarchives as they are adding more and more new names that are not related to the world of prog.
If i listen to some DEPECHE MODE, i can hear some prog touches here and there, so should we add them to progarchives too?

Well, just think that I consider prog more a period than a genre, and you'll understand why I agree with the first statement in this topic.

that's quite scary. By judging time and not music style, your interpretation could mean all music starting 1965 is prog (or any band could join progressive rock, just for being in a sort of connected state with the movement).

Well, this is just my 2 euro cents, but i think they play too loud and their riffs are too heavy to be considered a proto-prog band.

Certainly one of the most influential bands of all time, for heavy metal.
But I don't know if they'd fit in at Prog Archives. Unless there was a "Proto-Prog Metal" category.

that has been the main reason... and the definitive reason why Sabbath hasn't been included here even though these threads pop up every month or so... and probably the main reason they may NEVER be included here.

Not currently rejected.
We will however let the Whoa addition settle down before considering further.

Black Sabbath are not the band who influenced prog (metal), they're the band who influenced bands who influnced prog metal.

Black Sabbath inluenced Metal overall, so, they influenced Prog Metal too! They could be Proto Prog because of that, and they're as prog as The Who IMO.
BTW, hey! Wakeman played on their Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album!! That's prog, and is considered by many as the first Prog Metal album ever!!

If we have pseudo-proto-prog bands like The Who here, I, for one, think that there are TWO proto-prog-METAL bands that should be here: Black Sabbath and Metallica. The latter has been rejected by the owners, but if the former is still open, I hope they're included. Three bands influenced prog-metal the most: those two and Iron Maiden. The Beast is already here, THE ONLY prog-related band that is metal (talk about love for the genre)... I hope at least the fathers are here...
Led Zeppelin also inmfluenced prog metal but more indirectly... Black Sabbath did it more directly.

Sabbath can't be proto-prog. It's a matter of definitions. Proto-prog is supposed to be the proggy stuff that came before prog, but Sabbath started at around the same time as the real prog movement, and was never considered a part of it.
Early Sabbath strikes me as vaguely prog-related, but I'd sooner see Jimi Hendrix included than the early Sabbath albums.
Also, the fact that they (and Metallica) influenced prog-metal is basically irrelevant. Are we going to include Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan because they're proto-prog-folk? Should we include Mozart and Beethoven because they're proto-symphonic-prog? (Admittedly, I love all of those musicians/composers, but this is a *prog* website).

I agree, since I've just heard Beethoven and Mozart as wise ideas. This is criminal. From Sabbath to Hendrix and Dylan, all this has been waken up by the addition of Who.
