There is so much mindblowing music waiting to be found within the so-called "tech-death" genre! I've heard a lot of the bands mentioned, and many of them are incredibly good!
And I do believe Fredrik Thordendal's Special Defects deserve a mention in this thread, Sol Niger Within is a facemelting record! Along with Meshuggah, it's what made me decide to explore tech-death in the first place! |

I like Death.
Coroner is also good, unless they somehow do not fit the technical death category. |

Ha, my threads keep getting moved and I forget about them. But on the topic:
Nile are pretty techy, especially on the new album, Ithyphallic. I wouldn't call them tech death, they're still straight-up DM, but they're definitely doing something interesting with it. Highly recommended.

One of my recent finds. Not exactly tech death, but loved it anyway. Edited by Majestic_Mayhem - August 08 2007 at 22:17 |

Indeed, some of these bands are fantastic. As with anything, i think a lot of them can get over-technical and get a little lost, but there are some real gems about.
Actually i'm just checking out a band called The Faceless, on myspace, who may fit in this thread. It's been a while since i've been impressed with any newly discovered Death Metal. Edited by Reverie - August 08 2007 at 02:25 |

Usually vocals get to me in the death genres with the exception of Opeth and Devin Townsend's solo material (and that's kind of different) but Cynic's Focus is an interesting album...the vocoder simultaneously makes it cooler and cheesier at the same time, like a jazz death version of Herbie Hancock
and Behold...The Arctopus is all kinds of amazing |

I like this genre very much, and there are some totally awesome drummers, for example Flo Mournier! Also, what do you think people of CRYPTOPSY and KRISIUN? For me, they're awesome, but they may be annoying to a lot of people because they're extremely heavy!!

these are the artists I love from this area too, though to me (perhaps because they have no singers) they fall more into the realm of Extreme Tech rather than Tech Death |

That's the one I'll get first. There are several other tech/death/jazz bands Im checking out now as well, such as Ephel Duath, Frantic Bleep, Alarum, Canvas Solaris etc.

Yes, yes, yes, their Obscura ('98) album is a stone cold classic. |

Jody, would you liken any of these bands to Psycroptic? I remember the first time I saw them, they absolutely blew me away. Their old vocalist was amazing, he could alternate between high pitched screams to guttural belches to sounding peculiarly like a pig at the drop of a hat. One of the best things to come out of Tasmania. |

Ah I forgot them! Crimson and Obscura are both amazing albums!
Anyone heard Rune? They're a defunct band from Dayton that released two full-lengths and a split, kind of a Gorguts-meets-My Dying Bride sound, really good sh*t.

I didn't like ATG that much...they recycled their material a lot.
I've heard Red Chord also...good band. And Edge of Sanity Gorguts anyone? |
