I say we add AC/DC as proto prog metal.

Metallica's older works (80's) have to outshine Iron Maiden

This is extremely unfair, since all three bands have been important to me, and I really enjoy (most of) their music. I've gone with Maiden, nonetheless, because it was them that got me into rock music in the first place.

Hmmm....
Metallica's first 3 albums were simply great, ...And Justice for all was also good but was let down by the mix - no bass and really dry sounding drums (tap tap tap). I hated the 5th album - Smell the Glove.
Maiden - Live after Death is one of the best live albums in my opinion, next to it the studio albums seem dull (they are still good though). However, I don't think LAD is as good as ...
AC/DC's If you want blood - quite possibly my favourite live album. I like all the Bon Scott stuff, but I just don't like Brian Johnson's voice, their 'recent' stuff (90's on) seems weedy, the lead guitar does not have the space or presence which made the 70's stuff so good.
My vote goes to Metallica, because despite their recent stuff, those first few albums are classics.

Metallica mainly for Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightening and The Black album.
AC/DC and Iron Maiden have probably released more albums that I enjoy overall though.

Iron Maiden are the best ever metal band. I saw them live at the Playhouse Edinburgh, blew my ears away (2 days to be exact). AC/DC were brilliant till Bon drunk himself to death, got a bit too commercial after that. Metallica, were/are mianly a noise, with few decent tracks.
