So, the year is not over yet, tthere are still two months, but I think we can already make our personal lists of what we think are!were the best albums of this year. You can either make your own list, where you put your favorites, or you can make a list keeping in mind the big names, the revolutionary albums and everything the collabs always take into account when they make the top albums list every year... its up to you!

Ok, I will make mine... but only from 5 albums

  • 1) Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - In glorious times
I know, this might sound like a cry from a fan boy, but Im telling you its true! This is the album of the year, not only is it one of their best (well.. you only have two others to chose from jejeje), but its a great representative of the genre, a forward thinking band that keeps pushing boundaries and overall an excellent album from start to finish. Highly original!

  • 2) Porcupine Tree - Fear of a blank planet
The most anticipated and talked about prog album of the year, is also one of the very best the band has ever delivered. A concept album that deals with a current subject, like it or not, Wilson makes it sound not as a problem, but as a warning. The whole band is at the top of their game, specially Gavin Harrison who with this album has insured his place among the best drummers of prog history. Plus... the album has, what I believe is the best song of the year: Anesthesize!

  • 3) Phideaux - Doomsday Afternoon
This is the album that put Phideaux in everybodys album collection. Even though the man has been making good music for a good while, Doomsday Afternoon made a giant step forward in terms of popularity and quality. Also a concept album, and one with recurring themes and melodies (which I love in concept albums), this is almost a rock opera with more than one voice telling the story. The production is flawless and many instruments like violins give it an extra deph most of us appreatiate.

  • 4) Ulver - Shadows of the sun
Trickster G.´s band is known for their eclectic style and for never remaining in the same place for too long, and their altest album is no difference. But at the same time it seems Ulver discided to stop their eclectisism and remain for a good while in a calmer, minimalist place where sound effects and experimentation take a minor role, while Trickster´s vocals and lyrics gain more importance. The result is probably their most personal and emotional effort this far.

  • 5) *Moonsorrow - V- Havitetty *
Even though this band is not in the archives, and it´s even understandable why, as they aren´t completly prog metal, more viking than anything else, this last album is a jewl. With only two songs, both of the most epic proportions metal can deliver, clocking almost an hour between both, the band has never been tighter and more creative. The first song "Jaasta Syntynyt - Varjojen Virta" (30 min) is in my book, along with "I" from Meshuggah, the best metal epic ever written.

Beardfish are still tops for me...but Riverside will challenge them, and then many bands are crowding a ways behind:  Black Bonzo, La Torre dell"Alchimista, Anekdoten, Pax Cecilia, Obscura, Nobabene, Phideaux...

There's a lot of good stuff out there beyond the popular albums we talk about all the time.

I haven't listened to too many albums from this year, but this is about how I'd rank them, I have a tie for first at the moment:

1. Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet (4.5)
1. Riverside - Rapid Eye Movement (4.5)
3. Oceansize - Frames (4)
4. Porcupine Tree - Nil Recurring (4)
5. Blackfield - Blackfield II (3.5)
6. Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos (3)
7. Abigail's Ghost - Selling Insincerity (2-2.5, not too impressed by this one)

I haven't listened to Yndi Halda enough to rank it.

If I could include non-prog albums, Chevelle's Vena Sera (4) would be third.

Strong contestant for album of the year for me is the new Manes album!

It's one of the most original albums of the year I've heard so far.

I'm still getting into a few recent buys and there's time yet for another excellent cd or 2( or 20 Big%20smile) to get into my collection before the end of the year but my top 10 will almost certainly include the latest releases by Rush, Porcupine Tree, Dream Theater, Beardfish, The Flower Kings, Threshold, Riverside and Amaran's Plight.......and that's just the Prog stuff.

That only leaves room for 2 more!.......Sleepytime Gorilla Museum perhaps Thumbs%20Up

Unfortunately, YNDIes' EP is from 2006. If it would bt from 2007, I'd have no problems with defining The Album of the Year

UPD: wait, you gave only 4 stars to Frames?
