I think I was misunderstood when describing math-rock
It has evrything good about punk: the energy, DIY attitude, and genral "f**k you" mentality but it also has the complexity and pretentiousness of prog.

Oh and we need to get Drive Like Jehu on the site, they are probablly the second most important Math-Rock band, right behind Don Cab
who hiccuped endlessly trying to giggle but wound up with a sob

The progtologists friends band, Trephine, are heavy and mathy almost to the point of tech metal. Good band Jody.

Why not check out a short video just to be sure?
http://www.progarchives.com/media.asp?id=985

or for a less melodic math rock sound:

Hope those videos change your perception towards the genre.Smile

Math rock is not probably the best term for the style, but we need to remember that it Is already considered a genre and already has a name that has been widly accepted, its not made up by the site like "eclectic prog".

The defining characteristic of Math-Rock is that it is a fusion of Prog, Avant, and Punk. And a lot of it sounds like punk in complex time signatures.

As for the post connection it is because they both developed around the same time by groups of connected bands. (math rock has a ton to do with Tortoise and early post but has little to do with GY!BE and the second wave of post)

that was what I was afraid of... I now know I will never get into math rock...LOL
from the little I have heard and understood it involves this st**id punkish beat Angry

To be honest I've never heard a "punkish beat" in any of the math rock bands I know of and if does have it they add polyrhythms, play it backwards and make it sound as complicated as possible...

So that simple punkish beat won't sound so simple nor punkish after a math rock band plays it.  Wink
