I know they don't but they sound similar to the ones he mentioned. I just couldn't think of a band of that sort...my badConfused any similar band that sounds like the pirate ship quintet?

^^^ Both those bands don't really have a math rock in their sound. Russian Circles have some math rock influences, but it's barely audible if any at all.

Here are some good Post-Rock bands with Math Rock influences and vise versa:

AUTO!AUTOMATIC!!
DEL REY
FROM MONUMENT TO MASSES
GIRAFFES? GIRAFFES!
TENEBRE
TOE.

All of those bands are melodic like any post-rock band, but they always have that edgy sound math rock bands are known for. Enjoy.Smile

Why not try The Pirate Ship Quintet or Russian Circles...

This thread could use a bump Smile

Ok, so I'm just discovering that I like math rock.  But I don't like how alot of the bands (that i've heard) are too fast...it seems like too much to process at one time.  I enjoy the complexity of odd time signatures/polyrhythms and spectacular drumming, but don't like how it feels too rushed with almost no memorable melody.  I already know that i LOVE post-rock, and have recently (thanks to the post rock/metal thread) found some cool bands that are somewhat on the border of post-rock and math-rock, leaning a little more towards the post-rock side (like Neil On Impression, The Samuel Jackson Five, and Tera Melos).  I also really enjoyed the hint of jazz in The Samuel Jackson Five.  I guess my question is, do any of you know of more bands that are similar to this?  Bands that are both very math-rock but very post-rock as well?

But what about bands such as Toe or 65 Days Of Static which are located exactly in the middle? They have some elments of both genres, so I would'nt say rarely. But yeah there are still some bands as you said that are completly different from one another.

Generally Tortoise isn't, but I have seen to them reffered to as such and at times I think they are, but mainly they are post-rock Slint on the other hand is considered one of the founding fathers of both math and post rock.

just to be clear;  MathRock has evolved into a very specific style of guitar-based, pattern-oriented music with noise and punk undertones..  neither Tortoise nor Slint sound anything like the representative Math bands such as Oxes, Sleeping People, Battles, Don Cab   ..Slint is Prog Related and Tortoise is Post Rock

What I don't understand is ... why are these two  genres listed together? I don't see many simmilarities at all...

Well I was just wondering.Shocked But I've read somewhere that the term math metal was often refererd as technical metal just as you said. Ever heard Trephine? This band is considered math rock and I think it is, but it's not in math rock because of it's metal tendencies.

Wouldn't math metal be considered the same thing as technical metal?Confused
It makes sense that math rock is to rock as post metal is to post rock, as mathcore (also called technical metalcore) is to metalcore as you would assume math (technical) metal is to metal?

At the risk of sounding obvious watch your spelling here - Giraffe was a Californian (Genesis) prog tribute band, lead by Kevin GIlbert.....

hey check out Meet The Feebles, just got their EP A Dream... and they tend to show a math rock influence similar to Maps + Atlases but not to technical or fast.
