Well hello to all who read this. It is I, Kevin...errr Prof.
I am not too new to the site, but I am new to the Forums. I have been browsing for awhile, and my friend has finally made me join up.
Lets see, im a nerd by trade. I play DnD, WH40k, Magic, and more video games then I care to count.
I am 19 years young, and I have been told I was born 30 years too late.
Around 15 I started listening to Classic Rock 101, which gave me a taste of Ruch, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Doors, Queen, etc.
Mike, aka King By-Tor, was the one who really got me into 'Prog', or at least calling it Prog. Rush, Van Der Graff Generator, King Crimson,  and most recently, Phideaux and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. I myself I found more bands then I feel like listing, but Jethro Tull would probably be my favorite.
 
Stuff im lookin for, assides Phideaux and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, are Comus, Gryphon, The Legendary Pink Dots, and Focus.
 
Anywho, this post is long enough as is, message me if you want to chat. Ill be looking foreward to the new bands I find.

Great tastes you have there. I'd recommend checking out Caravan and getting into the Canterbury Scene; it'll be an easy transition from your tastes. Thumbs%20Up

Yeah, I was browsing through each section checking out what the top rated stuff had to offer and I liked the Canterbury Sceen stuff. Ill be looking for something in that genre next time I CD shop.
 
And I just streamed some Mr. Bungle and its pretty good on the first listen, ill have to see if we have any round here.
 
Oh and can anyone give me a good Jazz Rock/Fusion artist to start on?

Well I tend to err more on the guitar side of things. If that's your thing as well, you can't go wrong with Allan Holdworth. That man is a sheer genius and one of the greatest virtuosos on the electric guitar.
For a more metal take on Fusion, try out Planet X and Liquid Tension Experiment.

Normally, on noob welcome pages all I say is "Magma, that is all.", but you seem like you might enjoy some avant-garde/RIO. Try out some modern avant bands like Mr. Bungle. You already like SGM, so that's a good sign. Once you get into that, explore some older stuff, the RIO scene, Henry Cow, Univers Zero, whatever looks good to you.

edit; ah, I see you already enjoy Mr. Bungle. Then I can almost guarantee you will enjoy the avant/RIO subgenre, and probably - eventually - the Zeuhl genre as well. Go read some reviews for some of the popular albums, write down a couple CD names, and keep an eye out for 'em. www.waysidemusic.com and www.amazon.com both sell a lot of them.

And, of course, Magma.

Please stop by the Canterbury Appreciation Thread in the Prog Artists Appreciation Forum - plenty of good advice and discussion about this fantastic genre.  As you start acquiring albums please post there and let us know what you think.

Great album that you should pick up is Romantic Warrior by Return to Forever.

Check out any of their three albums, they're all excellent. Disco Volante is the most experimental and crazy, but If you liked the sample from it you should dig it!

There's simply too much good stuff out there. Make sure you have a steady income so you don't go broke!

Hi Prof, neato choice of bands. =) SGM and Comus can open a lot of doors.

oh, hmm, and I used to play Magic but the new sets scare me away with their overpowered creatures and increasingly undercommunicative templates... *cringes from WotC*

Welcome!! Nice tastes..

Try out for jazz rock, surely you will like Billy Cobham's Spectrum. If you liked Tommy Bolin playing in Deep Purple this will be a delite.
I also recomend Romantic Warrior from RTF plus some Pat Metheny can't go wrong.
