Topic: Retropoll (TFK, Transatlantic, S'sB, others) Posted: August 07 2008 at 14:21 |
I'm very happy that Retro-Prog exists, even though it's not a sub-genre of it's own. Majority being Symphonic.. I really just can't find any of these new modern Prog bands apeal to my taste, I've tried some Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, but nothing until I heard The Flower Kings. Espectacular prog band. Then I went with The Tangent and then with Transatlantic. Spock's Beard singing isn't to my taste.. So which one do you prefer? I'll definitely go with TFK, though The Tangent is a close second.

I've been an SB fan longer than a Tangent one so SB gets my vote this time. Very VERY hard to choose between the two though. Comparing The Water to A Gap In The Night would be an impossible task for instance. Both bands are among my favorites. Transatlantic is very good and TFK is starting to grow on me (but I'd probably like them more if their albums weren't so bloody expensive).
Long live "Retro" prog! - even if not every artist on that list would like being called that.

I absolutely adore the Flower Kings. Another extremely good band missing is Echolyn.

I have to agree that TFK is awesome (especially live and especially Reingold) with The Tangent second (Reingold, again) but I need to add Simon Says who I am still drooling over..... Magenta is fine as well.

Can Pendragon be considered retro? Despite, of course, of having the typical Neo-Prog aspects, much of their sound is quite Retro on albums like The Window of Life and The Masquerade Overture, their best albums IMO. Still haven't heard Not of this World and Believe, but I have no willing to purchase the second.

Transatlantic doesn't have enough of a discography for me to pick them. Very difficult choice for me between the rest. I'd probably take Spock's Beard over The Flower Kings, but it's close. But i'm picking The Tangent. I think i'd take their 4 albums over my 4 favourite Spock's Beard or Flower Kings records. And By-Tor if you like Beardfish you should have taked The Tangent ,cause soon they'll be part of The Tangent. Am i wrong or what!

Transatlantic, the best of the Beard and TFK in one band. Btw, these are just relatively new Symphonic Prog bands, the "retro" thing is a total misconception. The bands on this list show more creativity than the vast majority of supposed "modern" bands.

I would say The Flower Kings because i have been impressed by RETROPOLIS, but their last one doesn't do a thing for me.
Spocks Beard has some very good moments to enjoy as well, Morse or no Morse.

Spock's Beard appeal to me most from this list, if I`m in the mood that band have the ability to give me goose bumps. The Flower Kings are fantastic musicians but I feel their lyrics and vocals sometimes are a bit average.

The Tangent. Much more creative than TFK and SP. Transatlantic is just a copy-paste, nothing more. Beardfish would be great too, not copying the typical Yes-Genesis symph prog, but copying the atypical Gentle Giant style

Glass Hammer for me over any of these. I like what I've heard by SB and TFK though.

It's so hard to choose between the Beard and TFK, I'll choose Transatlantic, straddling the middle. I agree with most of the other comments here however. Although I'd take "Unfold the Future" or "V" over any Transatlantic CD.
